Title: Locost update
Post by: ktown powder coating on March 29, 2010, 09:52:53 AM
I have not posted anything about the Locost build since my intro wanted to wait till I started doing the turbo install... So here goes.

Here is the Weir log manifold kit with the DMS T25 install and the IC piping tacked in place.

looks good so far.  when do you want that main hoop bent up?  i may be getting a 1.75" die set soon, so you'll have a choice from 1.5" 1.625" or 1.75".  i've got a valve cover i'd like powdercoated.

I am going to do the measurments for the hoop this week and I will give you a call.

Man, I just stumbled acrost these locosts not to long ago and have been amped up on them sense.  I am hoping to get started on one as soon as I clear out some other projects.  Yours looks bitchen!  What are you using for front spindles?  Also, are you doing IFS in the rear or solid axle?

Yah, locosts are pretty badass.  I bought a book called Kimini a while back which is basically a write-up of someone else's DIY build.

Been through that entire build too.  That was an excellent car.  I am so hooked on these things now I am almost tempted to get rid of the double to make space for this.

Only way it could be cooler is with a turbo-D in front and a turbo-D in back. Nobody can resist drooling over double-D's... ;D

That shits really cool though. I can only imagine even a miata motor will be atom-like in all aspects.

I want 0 lag for autocrossing.  So the T25 will work perfect for that, besides it was free and had just had a rebuild done on it.

There are a few different types of plans.  There are the "Book Plans" that come from "how to build a cheap sports car", or something like that, then they have some others like the 442 which is 4 inches wider, 4 inches longer, 2 inches taller, and a couple other variations.

The spacers are small enough that they do not limit the heim movements.   That is the reason for the beveled edge.

More creative, sure.  Better?  Despite his design and fab that's doubtful.  ktown may only be doing "just another" 7 clone, but it's a PROVEN chassis design that's stomped a mudhole in modern supercar performance figures.

Fuel issues.  We had never driven the car more then 10 feet before I took it to the autocross.  It would bog out if I got onto it to fast.  Going to take some time to sort out all the issues with this thing.  I was still very happy with how it ran.

I drove it and mid throttle (rolling into it) it took off , full throttle it bogged.  The RRFPR was causing some issues and some vac line orientation , seems to be fine now , just need a fuel pressure gauge.

The parts on this were part of the SC kit that I got.

Ditch the crap management and get a MS.  Not my favorite setup for just any car, but the Miata is the testbed for MS1/2, and they run one of those cars very well.

The plan is to do MS down the road..  Right now its just not in the budget.

Well a few weeks ago I was out lapping the car and the rear diff mount broke.  This pulled the drive shaft out of the tranny that then smashed the end off the tranny and wrapped the main wiring harness around it and wripped it in 2.  So I have installed a new tranny but looks like I am also going to need to replace the shorten drive shaft :(

Because locosts get you laid, and bitching about someone's locost on the internet does not. :noel:

Lead by example and make up a MS system for him. Then tune it over the phone like we know you can.

you have to respect the amount of work that went into this.

whats up with the exhaust sound. after all that work it sounds like you really
cut some corners on the exhaust.

you should'a put a 4ag in there. haha.

The exhaust is 2.5" mandrel bent SS , the problem is that it's running a RRFPR and MSD setup and loading on fuel.  I was there when it broke @ shannonville , car was running a lot smoother , he still wants to do mega squirt

It was doing a pretty decent job of keeping up to a formula ford car around the track.  Not bad for a backyard homebuilt special.

That hasn't had all it's bugs worked out yet, whose owner isn't fully familiar with it yet?  Yeah, it's awesome and there's still room to grow.

There is a ton of room to grow with the car and once the bugs ar worked out it will be a wepon both in an autocross and lapping.  But for now I am just happy to have it running again.
Sadly MS wont be happening this year and might not even happen next year.  So I will just make due with what I've got and make the bext of it.

how do you go about registering this thing to make it street legal. that would be awesome.

i did a MS on a 4agte. im pretty sure that diy tuning has a write up on the miata too.
cost me 250 out the door.

All states are didderent. Basicly safety stuff and proof nothing on its stolen.  That's why I keep an old civic title that I scraped.

the problem is not getting it on the road here in Ontario.  The problem is getting insurance on it.  So it will only ever be a track car.

Here in Ontario. You either register the car as a home made car (and there needs to be some kind of proof it's home built). Which only requires a safety like a normal car. and a regular e-test. Or, register it as a kit car (Then there needs to be a ton of receipts showing you paid for the parts and some sort of kit). Which requires a full out structural inspection and safety. And similar e-test... I think..
But it's up to the person at the desk whether it gets registered as a home made or kit car.

However, finding a shop to do the safety is another story.

Then the car needs to be appraised. In order to get insurance. But apparently there a few companies that will actually insure it.

No not really.  They list the car as the year you are done building it not the year of the car the parts came from.  So insurance look at it as a new 2010 car.  Plus it's a home built so it went right to facility insurance

The US does things differently.  It's a state by state affair.  I'm pretty sure if it's a legal vehicle then they have to give you liability insurance... or do in NC, anyway.

I've seen a locust or a seven just up the street from with license plates.

I've talked to a few kit car guys here and they said it was relatively easy license one.

Most of the time they just stamp a number on the frame that meets the state's requirements (do not remember the exact requirements  :-\).

I also was told that there is insurance companies who specialize in kit cars that you get insurance from relatively cheap.

Just need some appraisals and such.

Check out Kit Car magazine in the back there is always some info. on how to insurance even for Canadia.  ;D

You have inspired me. We finished a sick supra build for a very wealthy customer recently to haul around to car shows. The first time ever that this car didnt take best engine was to a civic with a turbo diesel truck motor in it.He already has a $300000 supra so you get the idea. I think a lowcost with a twin turbo viper motor should do the trick. Prolly cost him alot less.

Took my son for a quick rip down the street on Tuesday before I was going to put it on the trailer to take it to an autocross,  I blew out the gasket on the intake manifold.  So today I replaced the gasket and fixed the problem.  Well I had the manifold off I powder coated it and the fuel rail.
