Title: Ching-Chong-Boost
Post by: JaredKaragen on January 31, 2012, 07:41:49 PM
How many of u guys have measured your ching chong snails?

I just did a trim calculation... and something doesnt seem right...

(1.987/3)^2*100 = 43.86~

Some odd things dont add up...

yes... the inducer is 1.987 (measured with caliper) and exducer is 3"... so I can see some quick spool.. but loss in topend...

anyone else gotten these kind of odd numbers when calculating trim?  I was hoping I got a 57 trim, but it doesnt appear that way.

Most ching chong 57trims are closer to a 50trim

t explains why what is normally a 50 trim ended up being this.

out of spec... ya...  junk... naw.  i have had 3 and they have all worked fine, not blown, no burning oil, etc.  all were sold and are still used by the happy buyers.

my last 57 trim made huge dummy top-end power on my 1.5... i was gonna use this on my GSR i am finally rebuilding (head @ machine shop), but now that its measured i think ill use it on the z6 and sell the td04h-13c =)  it should give pretty good spool around 4.5-4.8K.

for my gsr i ultimately want a turbo capable of 420-450hp... which a 57 trim would be at this engine's cfm with the pistons/setup i am using.

"TRIM" numbers used on all ebay, and CL turbos is just plain wrong. unless it is sold with a PTE/Garrett receipt telling you the actual specs i wouldnt believe shit.

i measured several, if even getting that far, before giving up looking for a 50trim for my car. just bought a real on from Mike at LSD....

57trim = crap... ebay or real.

If they are fucking up something this simple imagine what else they fucked up on the turbo....

The ching chong shit seems hit or miss.  Ive gotten some things that were actually nice, and somethings that are pure shit.

Mislabeling by seller is hardly fucked up manufacturing, they are just making a product... Cheaply at that.

Well given the exducer size, it has some spool potential;  inducer... Not really big numbers.

I know of two brand/type of eBay turbos that carry close to a 55 trim mark with roughly the same size exducer of mine...  That would be good for power...  But I know, it's been hit an miss with measurements of these... I just had a 51.21~ trim last time... And reliable

I was looking into this a bit, and the turbos with the t04b covers have a larger inducer and smaller exducer. It's still not a 57trim, but it's larger than the 2"/3" model. It's a V-trim t04b wheel at 2.180/2.750". ~48lb/min for the v-trim vs ~40lb/min. The prob is it's less efficient and much laggier than even a true 50trim t04e. I have seen examples of the 2/3" getting past 350whp tho.

You'd be better off getting the ebay turbo with the 61mm inducer if you want power.
