Title: 92 Integra, lsvtec, holset, take 3
Post by: Tim on April 14, 2012, 11:52:00 PM
I had a build thread on hmt, then started one here but it got deleted with the hosting fuckup.
So here's number 3.

I bought this pos as someone's failed b16 swap.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2FIMG_2860.jpg&hash=393d09b6df8a9d279df9959022538b929292dfe3)

I fixed the ls that was in it and slowly got rid of the altezzas, projectors, z3 fiberglass fender shit.
Sold all of that and eventually the b16 to fund the project.
Added an HX-35 kit and blew a few pistons.

Sold a local a chipped ecu, 3 bar, 450's and tuned his ls/vtec.  He hit a pole a couple weeks later so I bought the swap (with all the extras) for stupid cheap.  Sold off the extras, had the mount welded on the block, and sold that too.

Cleaned up the head
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2F2011-08-27_02-24-41_977.jpg&hash=b19fe279803eb67a2ae744218260f6aa1e1e4408)

Rebuilt the bottom end (first one, hope she lasts)
Picked up a set of arps for $40
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2F2011-09-05_16-36-05_479.jpg&hash=c4926bea4911a96b21f68539fcc09620be1330c7)

Then I was in the right spot at the right time and picked up a b20z for $30  It even had a moroso oil pan still on it.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2F2011-09-10_11-04-05_405.jpg&hash=71de803fa2d229d6b82556372d31d7a21bdae858)

Threw it in late one night.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2F2011-09-16_03-12-30_335.jpg&hash=c5d1bf167a424b93fe46ef926786f7f098867b26)

I ran a ghetto oil line for the vtec, still have to test if it will have enough volume.  I haven't reved it into vtec yet since its not tuned.  Hell I havent even wired it up yet.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2F2011-09-15_23-33-50_363.jpg&hash=16e767e2c59641e42c5106b6df531e52208f5927)

Welded a vband onto the turbo outlet, got tired of drilling and tapping broken bolts anytime I had to pull the exhaust.
Of course this killed the tiny bit of clearance I had between the rad so I threw another manifold on.  It wasn't any better so I had to 'fix' it.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2F2011-09-24_00-44-00_454.jpg&hash=09046b9980a466bc03e9241b7eabbfa53087f081)

I warped the shit out of the manifold.  had to sand about an 1/8" out of the center to get it flat.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2F2011-09-29_20-13-18_905.jpg&hash=04e3ee5adb7cf883c6125ca6cc7e0debdcc6f033)

That was last year sometime.  Today I finally got around to pulling out the half rad that fit like shit.
Threw in a vw scirocco rad, fits like it was made for it.
This was ripped straight from a thread http://www.realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/index.php/topic,2391.0.html (http://www.realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/index.php/topic,2391.0.html)

Ive been wanting to connect a boost solenoid to the top of the wastegate, and install my new hood.  But every manifold I've had needs the webbing of the hood hammered to shit.  So once again I had to 'fix' the manifold.
I cut the flange off, and the tubing undernieth was much bigger than the elbow I was using.  I had to cut a bunch of slits and hammer it smaller.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2F92%2520Teg%2FIMAG0221.jpg&hash=407a561a9fa48a603fb5465625345065ea8bb842)

Then I welded the flange onto the other end of the elbow (random chunk of a stock h22 manifold)

Haha thanks guys. I just hope the wastegate tubing isn't too small and fucked up of an angle. Also hope the.engine stays together.  I still have the.b20 on.standby, and a semi built badass engine sitting on the shelf, so I'm not real worried about it.  Roller Vids will follow soon.

Tubing size looks ok, but it looks really far from the manifold. I don't know how the gas will like to go that far.

I like the build. Probably because it looks like my first attempt (success attempt ;) ) to boost my red integra!

Forgot to post pics of the intercooler mounts I made.
I couldn't get the zip ties off so I had to cut them. I've been reusing the same ones I put on probably 5 years ago, I think you can see them in the pics with the orange duct tape.

Anyway I had a cutoff wheel, drill, and hammer.

Pulled the pan to plastigage my bearings cause tom had me worried.
They were all wearing fucked up, glad I checked.
He thinks they were too tight so now I need to swap in a looser set and recheck.

I'll post some shitty pics later.

Ok check these pics out and see if they tell you anything.

I'll try and get it back on the lift and plastigage them to see what that tells me, but maybe these marks will tell someone something.

Looks ok...  But;  if u have a bore mic, check the rod end for roundness...  And crank journal.  If all is ok; should be fine.

Ordered a set of acl race x bearings.
Say they are +.001 on the oil clearance.

Pulled #2 and #4 mains and they gaged between .0015 and .002
Threw the new bearings in and they were the same.

Idk about this shit anymore.
I get so dirty working on it, its going to be a miracle if I don't Fuck it up somehow.
I knicked the #1 rod journal so I sanded it with 1500 lightly and all looked good.
Oh well I have a couple other bottom ends and learned a lot if this one goes.

Need to button up some wiring and I'll be done.

Yeah, I'm going to guess that was my problem, I was a bit tired at 3:30 am and explained weird.
I ended up with those clearances after adding the set of +.001 bearings on the rods, I took out a set of standard Kings.
Mains I just opened up and put right back cause all was well

So in theory if king and acl std are the same my clearances would have been .0005-.001.  Seems a little tight.

The only reason it will suck now is if I got dirt or bearing pieces somewhere they don't belong.  Very possible with as dirty as the barn was and as hard as it was to reach in there.  I gave up and slapped it together anyway.

Went to look at the car tonight, decide if it was close enough to tune.
Ended up soldering in my lc-1, extra inputs, vtec, boost solenoid.

I had a harness that clipped on for the wideband and ectune, serial, and my o meter all read different.
Now my serial and ectune read dead on. I'll have to check the program on the o meter.

I wired my fuel pump directly off the battery and block with 10ga, a fuse, and a relay last week.
Now the basemap that was so lean I had to add 60% fuel is so rich it reads full lean at idle from misfires.
Either that or I had something seriously wired wrong before.

Looks like this piece of shit is ready to visit tom tomorrow.
I'm still convinced somethig will keep it from running right and being tuned, but maybe because it seems like nothing is ever done on this thing.

Made 310 and didn't blow up.
Runs smooth like stock, best its ever ran.
Tom is the man, hooked it up.
Will have dyno sheets and ripper bids soon.

Let me fix these oil leaks and make sure its not the turbo shitting.
Then as soon as I throw this b20 together I'm down.

I don't want to do it without a complete engine on the stand waiting.

Bought a house with a 2 stall garage today.
Have ARP rod bolts and a turbo rebuild kit waiting to go in.

Then its FINALLY more boost and a higher rev limit to see what it can take.

Not a lot of miles on it, but the ones I do put on it are always to the floor and often off the rev limit

Ha I wish it was no big deal. Had to have a survey, well inspection, and some other last minute shit done.  Didn't get my down payment from where I thought I could so I had to ask my sister to wire me money. The bank didn't like that so they had to review my mortgage app and whole situation on tuesday. All to go into too much debt for too little house.

But it's all fucking mine and no more landlord and shitty appt I want to burn down daily.  :) ill post some pics of the garage shortly.

Last-minute changes in money/assets really gets banks' panties in a knot. Mine was a HUD Home/forclosure, so it was retarded at times.

I think my garage was filled in 2 months. No matter since nobody around me cares what I do - which kicks ass! I'm sure you'll love it, but just know it will start sucking up time & money to get everything "just right".

Still haven't had a chance to crank the boost yet, doing some little shit that is taking way to long. Car has been down a couple weeks.

Bearings looked like they just came out of the box, cyl 3 had a huge scratch from some unknown reason. Slapped it back together fuck it.

Buddy bought a bottom end I was interested in last week while i was on vacation. Dropped it in my garage and said it was mine? Supposed to be forged rod piston with a smoked piston and bore. Turns out it was 3 smoked pistons but it was a sleeved block no one knew about, I'm pumped. Need to measure the bore and see if it is usable.

Excellent build on the car.  Very thorough work taking apart the engine over/and/over again.  Why is the cross member factory pink?  Above all else you did an excellent job restoring a simple DA.  Can't wait to see the tuned numbers.

Thanks Quadnie, I have a love hate relationship with this car.  I pile parts and plan things, then throw the nice shit on the shelf and last minute slap something together instead.  I'm weird like that, Fuck it, this engine was only supposed to be last summers build anyway.  Car is turning into such a hack job but its fun to beat on.

It finally runs, no pictures worth anything of course, but some of my scratched cylinder and shitty practice oring job.
Going to take it to Tom tonight and see what breaks er maxes out first.

Supposed to take it to IFO on Sunday and beat the fuck out of it... if it lasts til Sunday that is.

Held together, need to fix my clutch and get more practice.
2nd time ever at the track (first was 5 years ago) 1st time with slicks
Had to pull an all nighter to fix some last minute issues.

Actually starting to feel a little proud of my piece of shit beater. especially with how cheap I am about it (cause of my clutch issue)

Pretty good et for the mph. Most fwd track noobs have to push mid 120's to see 11 sec et's. So you said it made 410whp, how much tq did it make?

I don't remember.  I was running the dyno while Tom was tuning and ripping on the car, I forgot to save the run before clearing it.
We didn't run another full pull before we took it out in the street for a little driveability touchups.
I didn't really care if I had a graph to try and brag so I didn't make him do another pull once we realized it wasn't there, it was my fault anyway.

Thanks, that's what everyone has been telling me.  It is already way more than I expected and low 11's would be bad ass.
I just lined up a good clutch cheap, and I'm going to start treating my slicks to soften them back up.
Need to go over the coolant system, it needs bled before every time you start it or it risks overheating.
Should be back at the track in a week or two for some TNT practice.

I've always run nothing on the turbo, ever.

Ironically I was just thinking about running something a couple days before this happened.

Might I ask why you recommend against a screen of some sort?
I understand not running the shitty filters, and I don't know if I have room for a proper filter (plus I'm a cheap bastard)
but I would think a screen would have held the ground strap back until I noticed that by buddy forgot to put it on.

Screens restrict airflow, only about 50-70% of the surface area flows air. They also don't prevent the small rocks/sand that will abrade the wheel edges. Go to K&N website, they have a search tool that can find the right sized filter. Most K&N filters average $35 on amazon.com, don't be that cheap!

Rebuilt my turbo with a new wheel as it was sloppy as shit from running it with the grenaded wheel.
Sent it to Tom with some vp110 and told him to push it until something was maxed out.

Guess I was already there, he said he played with it alot and managed 421hp 365 tq at 21 psi

First run off the trailer.  I was on the left and my buddy with a thrown together crx beside me
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi218.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc302%2Fstenseltizm%2Fphoto2_zps59ebef8a.jpg&hash=816262ffef8b4b24f557afc9e3c70810cf322bfd)

I think I waited too long to replace my clutch and my trans has just had enough.
I fought to get clean 1-2 and 2-3 shifts all day and it just wouldn't have it.

This CRX sat in my garage for the last month and a half with me predicting that it was going to turn into a last minute slam together fest.
Last week we slept 2-4 hrs a day and knocked it out starting Sunday I think?  It was on the dyno Friday night, tuned to 16 there and then bumped it to 20 on the street.  Had some issues iwth the boost controller and we are thinking it was back at waste gate 13 on the track.
His best was 12.2@115, not bad for a slap together build and his first ever time at the track.

Interesting.  Didn't know that.  First i've heard it mentioned.  Figured it would be a non issue (for a track car that SOMETIMES see's street use) to run a screen since alot of factory turbo cars have a maf screen.  nevermind me though.  Grain of salt.  Please continue doing rad shit in your thread Tim.

Slicks are 24.5 on 13 inch exospeed (lenso)

I have 2 spare cable b16 trans I can throw in, also have two hasport cable to hydro conversion brackets I could use with one of my hydro b16 trans.

Doubt I'll do either as the car is just my fun street beater to hurt young punks feelings and do burnouts in. Doubt I'll do anything drastic to it.

Moved on to an 88 crx pile of junk. Might start a build thread some day, might sell it.

Guess I never updated this thread, but I offered it to my wife, she didn't want it since she didn't build it. Then broke a piston while I was building the crx, so I parked it.
I sold the charge piping, intercooler, and wheels and told her to have fun.

Rebuilt the trans last weekend, replaced the broken piston tonight.
I'm into it for the $8 machine shop charged me to press the piston.
Synchros and springs from free scrapped trans.
New rings from the leftovers box.
Ball hone to knock down some of the scores.
Might replace the head gasket, may see if I have a used one lying around.
I'll post some new pics tomorrow, photobucket still sucks.

After it sitting for almost 2 years in my driveway the cops showed up the day after I started working on the trans. Against ordinance, New neighbor called and I have 60 days before I get to tell them to Fuck off. They didn't follow their own procedure they handed me a copy of. I'm not paying any fine.

Waiting on someone to cut the dash into my crx cage so I decided to make this pos mobile since it's just sitting in my driveway and getting the cops called.

Welded up a battery tray.

Welded a vband, o2 sensor bung, and a mount bracket to the downpipe.

Finished my traction bar.
Cut the stock radius rods down

Cut a $20 swaged tube in half

Slid them together. Welded the end and threw a couple plug welds in the middle for good measure.

This thing has been waiting for me to finish the shortest list possible, and a tune.

On start up it sounded like it was on 3 cylinders, so i threw a stock map sensor and injectors in.
Still sounded like shit so i left it in the driveway for a week or 2.
Turns out when i swapped maps I never plugged the stock one in, fires up and idles like a stock car now.

Old garage laptop got something corrupted and goes straight to bsod on start up.
didn't feel like pulling the hard drive.
that has been the status for a few weeks.
Just tried to boot that laptop into safe mode, it worked. Now I can load the old tune that should be pretty close and at least won't sound like a subaru with the 1000s and 3 bar.
might even go over the suspension bolts and start to drive this thing to work.

Charged the battery last night.
Dont want to sound too ambitious, but I might work on this thing this week.

How is it possible that no one makes a vacuum cap worth a shit?

Pulled this pos in the garage and the coolant was low.  Figured I just never topped it off when i put the engine in.
3 separate leaks from eliminating the coolant lines to the throttle body and IACV.
Of course I had to lift it up 4 times because I found them one at a time.

3 bar and FID 1000s installed, old tune loaded.

She drove around town at 1:30 am Saturday.
Not really any brakes even though the pedal is rock hard.
What better way to break in a fresh trans then to aggressively downshift at every stop sign to prevent death.

Flushed new fluid through the brake lines while I checked everything over for issues.  Looks like pads just don't like to bite to rusted rotors.
Held the brakes on while I drove around, slightly better.
Probably throw a new set of rotors on since they're $9 each from rock auto.

Ran vac line to bov and wastegate. Actually started to build boost for a second until the BOV blew off, forgot its always been held on with a massive zip tie.
Feeling ambitious, might send the wife to Lowe's to get new mounting bolts and retire the zip tie.

New wheels on.
Still a rusty pos though.
driveway life has not been kind these last couple of years.

I ended up beating on this pos randomly over the summer, it really was a death trap.
Steering rack was sloppy as shit. front end bounced down the road like a basketball. exhaust fell off. Never retuned it just running an old tune hoping it didn't blow. rockers look to be soft in spots. Battery would randomly die like there was an intermittent drain. Sometimes got warm at stoplights.

Then a dirt track guy offered me a dumb amount of cash for the engine.
I pulled it last night and the part-out has begun.

It was a sad day, this car hurt a lot of feelings over the years, but the parts were worth way more than the car.
