Title: Ideas for shortening a RadiatorCore?
Post by: Emperor on May 19, 2013, 02:14:30 PM
Did Someone have an Idea how i can shorten my Rad Core without complete fucking it up?
its about 2 inches to wide ::)
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gm-carsolution.de%2Fimages%2Fproduct_images%2Foriginal_images%2Fkuehler_vr6_corrado.jpg&hash=7e5808c3c763bb8856038a04621f481372f944a4)

the plan
1)shorten the core (+point 3)
2)weld new endtanks (+point 3)
3)Drink some Beers (repeat)

the question is how i can remove that baseplate under the plastic endtank to reuse it? Most People cut only along the Rad Tubes......which isnt possibel with those glorrious VW crap.

oh and iam not in USA so there is no Shop which dont charge me $$$$ :?: to do a simpel work (cheapest was around 380$)

oh rulez(hope that didnt change):

I would think that you would be better off buying a new radiator core and welding/brazing/fabricating your own end tanks on.

that was my first idea.......but the dont sell them here :?:

well the main problem in germany is that we have only a handfull very very specialized shops for certain things ::)

balancing a driveshaft cost 600$ +
a dyno tune 1000$ up
and so on.......

thats why i build the most stuff by myself ::)

the main question right now is: How do i remove the endplate? i cant find any welding spots so its maybe just pressfitet.....looks like iam the first one which cut a rad in such way ;DDD

I belive the end tanks are held on by the aluminium that's crimped around it, if you were to take and bend the aluminum back that wraps around the end your plastic end tank should come right off. What about contacting vibrant about sending you a radiator core and then you could jb weld/ tig your end tanks onto it then. What about changing to a Honda half core radiator, or putting a earlier scroccio radiin? I put a scroccio rad in my crx. There is a write up about it in the fab section.

Yeah surely there is an existing radiator out there that is the right size for your application.  First generation non A/C neon radiators were pretty small and after that larger motorcycle radiators are even smaller.  Cutting cores and brazing new end tanks sucks.  That's kinda crazy that you don't have the specialty shops local.  I remember my dad having to take his old volvo radiator in to a rad shop to have the core replaced back 20 years ago because it was the cheapest option.. now just hop on ebay and spend $40 for a chinese part and you're good.

I'm just curious but in the history of doing crazy shit to cars has a china fmic ever been used in place of a standard radiator?

Seriously.

That's a very tedious task and time consuming wanting to cut/reweld tubes and then fabricate end tanks.  Is it worth your TIME?      I'm about to switch to a honda half core soon.   They aren't that expensive.   Like $70-80 for one that's aluminum and carries warranty, sometimes comes with e fans/controller too.

I'm sure you can find a rad that is the right size if you call up a decent rad supplier who gives a fuck. I know base EF Civic/CRX models came with a rad that was a wider than a Honda half core but narrower than a full integra core.

With all of my stupid car ideas, why didn't I ever think about using an intercooler as a radiator? Gonna have to try now. Lol

Yeah, I have serious doubts about the internal surface area being as good per volume, but most ICs are pretty big compared to a radiator.  It'd probably work out with a medium sized core.

Yea, my only concern is the tubes being quite a bit bigger in intercoolers compared to radiators. There would be a good bit of coolant not in contact with the aluminum. Still think I'm gonna try it when I decide to upgrade my current intercooler. I think the old one would have a pretty good chance of working
