Title: bbc tranny?
Post by: jdmhatchracer94 on February 13, 2014, 03:39:33 AM
ok 90 Silverado 1500 350/700r4 trans is dead and engine is on its way out. I have a 90 454 sitting here but what trans should I through behind it? I have read the 700r4 wont hold the tq of a bbc? A 4l80e is expensive and needs a controller. any have experience with a 700r behind a 454? dunno what to do with this thing.

For what you would spend to make the 700 actually last behind the big block, assuming you plan to actually hook or tow, you could have gone the 4L80E route.

FWIW, there were 4L80E equipped truck in that era, so dig around and you might be able to find the proper PCM.

Otherwise TH400 is pretty bombproof unless you are getting absolutely silly.

4l80e is the way to go and a stand alone controller is only 450.00
Can source that trans from alot of place easily and cheaply. 1400 dollars for a 700r4 to handle the stock torque of a 454.
i got a 4l80 setup with transfercase out of my 94 suburban with the stock 454 tbi engine. Still looking to do my cummings engine swap so looking for buy to purchase other parts.

No on the transfer case.  700R4 is 27 spline output shaft while TH400/4L80E is 32 spline.  IIRC, the bolt pattern for the adapter is different too.  A little too buzzed to remember off the top of my head at the moment.

Those damn LHD NP-241C transfer cases are easy as hell to find.  Although a 32 spline input shaft version might be a bit tougher to find. Try finding a RHD (right hand drop) version of the NP-241, not that is a damn challenge.

Prop shafts should be fine though.

There was no non-electronic version of the 4L80E as far as I know.

There are multiple generations of 4L80E..Begining in 1991-1993. Then 94-95, 96-99 and 99+. All with different electronics. You can make an older 4l80E run off from a 4l60E PCM but swapping some of the harness around and running a transgo vacuum modulator. instead an EPC.

However..The TH400 and 4l80E are two different animals..there is alot more gear inside of a 4l80, and elec. obviously.

And YES you can use your transfer case if you find a 32 spline input and swap it in..its childs play..pretty much if it starts with NP2XX you can swap the input around. And 4l60..4l80..TH400, Even the fuckin Allison has the exact same 6 bolt tcase pattern.

I should know because I swapped a 32 spline 6 pinion NP241 out of a older 2500 with a 4l80 into my '01 silverado 4.8/4l60E and stock NP246 autoshit..the TH400 is about the same length as a 60E same driveshaft would be fine..not the case for the 4l80, or at least it'd be cutting it close on the slipyokes.

But..I say fuck the auto's and put a SM465 behind that thing if you're buying a trans for it anyway..
