so I have a 1992 Civic CX... its all stock.
the other day im driving home, start to come into some traffic and oil light starts to flicker... shit. I have never even checked the fluids in this car... I kill it and roll to shoulder. check it over. its got plenty of oil. so iI crank it off and no light. so I drive it home.
I get home and look it over. harness looks unfucked with. so I swap out oil switch. let it run for a long ass time while put the carpet in the car. after a while he light comes back on??
car sounds fine btw. no real ticking noise or anything. just the input shaft bearing noise from the trans.
I turn it off. think for a second. then start her back up. light is off?? let it run for a while...5mins or so. and comes on again.
it seems to be coming on quicker now. but just the same. blinks quick. then starts to flicker. then comes in solid till I turn the car off for a couple seconds. then key on and start/kick the clutch if on a roll (aka 70mph on freeway)
oh yeah. and I did try unplugging it. after a while when the light didn't come on I kinda got scared... just a little. not sure I care in the end. just don't wanna pay at tow.
thoughts?

Spin a oil presure gauge in it
-
mechanical oil pressure gauges are what $20?
eliminates the guess.
-
there a better spot to get oil pressure from then? cuz its above the oil filter and is kinda a bitch to get to for testing.
-
Nope that's the spot I use
-
is the oil draining back to oil pan fast enough?
when replacing oil pressure switch, was there junk in that port? :noel:

idk. can't see in the engine when its running ::) nor could I see in the port. could barely reach it.
but seriously. I looked into the oil cap and there was oil in the head. just normal status. but after I shut it off. not with the light on. seen slight contamination in the old sensor.

I don't know if I missed it but you try another stock sender?

yup. another used one.
-
Well damn.....
-
Maybe the old bitch needs a good internal clean, might have a gallery partially blocked or the pump might be worn badly.
-
Is this a stock d series?

car has HX wheels and a deck and 2... most stock thing i have owned since i bought my Wagovan all those years ago...
100% stock engine/trans/etc.... 182xxx miles.

i was thinking about that today. kinda wish i had air in my garage. couple good blasts of compressed air down the drainbacks. then some seafoam for a couple cycles of the oil light. drain, refill with some 10w30 high miles + honda filter...
is the D worth 20bucks? i guess if it was legit i could just buy the new motor for it, and finish my turbo kit for DC4, then get around to building a motor for the CX when i feel like it...
-
Throw 4 oz of kerosene in the oil run it for about 5 min. Drain oil and refill and let her rip.
-
Any bad oil leaks?
-
none. I have barely even driven this car. maybe 200-250miles total? its full of oil.
-
just toss a brick on the gas pedal and finish it off.
It probably had a light knock and dude put heavy ass oil in and sold it
-
car was a theft recovery. it didnt need anymore help for the sale.
window tag says 5w30 with some solid miles left on it. oil even looks fairly clean. junk looking filter.
i bought it cuz of the color, AC, and straight chassis.
i think im gonna swap oil filters and see if that does anything. then some seafoam. then 10w30.... maybe. really if the oil filter doesnt solve it, im probably just wasting time.

I bet you have bunch of shit in the pan an after a while it clogs your pickup screen. Once you shut it off it it releases the suction on it and it all floats off it. You fire it back up and its ok for a few and then the cycle repeats itself.
-
Or, rather than guessing and throwing parts at it, you could hook up a gauge and watch it. I bet it's an electrical issue. I have a friend with a da Gsr that does similar stuff

honestly, it sounds easier the other way. i dont have the tools for that. it might sound stupid, but its what it is.
as far as electrical? the switch provides a ground, that turns the light on? power is just standard shit provided to the cluster. so if i unplug the switch it would tell if there is a short somewhere. i did that, and no light came on. = no short?
maybe im an idiot and cant diagnose shit... good possibility.

might thoughts also. or the relieve valve is sticking wideopen, and bypassing all the oil?

I saw this happen when rtv was used with oil pan gasket and some the rtv came off into the oil pan.

**UPDATE**
i swapped on a [used] honda filter in place of the ac delco that was on there. fucker must have run for 30+mins with no oil light. drove it the long way around town to stop and get lunch. still good. even made sure that when i shut it off that the oil light still worked ;)
so seems fine? i did pull the oil cap too when it was running (wtih honda filter) and there is oil circulating in there.
also fixed the SRS light.... yeah i unplugged it. but im down to no annoying warning lights now :) (srs, hatch, oil have all been on randomly in the couple miles i have driven this thing)
thanks
:Jew:

ok WTF...
so i just drove about 25miles or so, more than half was freeway, with no issue. but on the way back soon as im about mile from my house it flickers again!?!?! goes off. then randomly blinks for the rest of the way.

Are you sure this isn't your dsm?

Are you sure this isn't your dsm?
i dont have a DSM ???
but the Galant is having its own issues. on startup it wants to run on 2-3 cylinders till its warm, then randomly at idle it will drop a cylinder. plus it still isnt running on AEM.

Check your ignitor/coil pack the last one I worked on had that issue.
The guy had spent $2500 in AEM, 7bar map sensor, thinking his DSM link ecu was fucked, and all it was the ignitor. :noel:
-
Oil pump going bad? Only time I ever had a oil light flicker then the motor shit itself one day....
-
ICU is what i was thinking of.
-
Galant... i have another coil pack (from running vehicle), swapped with no change... i have another ignitor (from JY), swapped with no change.
CX... fuck. my guess is that my swap is ~$800 away... and thats just to running, not running the way i would like.
