Title: lets talk exhaust baffles
Post by: shadow on December 09, 2014, 11:29:35 PM
so im making an exhaust for a motorcycle, mostly out of boredom, but also the fact that its saving me a few hundred bucks lol.

now most baffles ive seen look like this:
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ducati.org%2Fforums%2Fattachments%2Fhow-tos%2F6031d1216984447-guide-stock-exhaust-baffles-removal-ducati-1098-848-perf_core1.jpg&hash=c4398e3a32772b1df2f01f7bb73ab051520c8b59)

the one i made, has less holes, looks kind of like this(but the holes all the way) :
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cycle-shack.com%2Fcycle%2Fagora.cgi%3Fpicserve%3D2006%2Flg%2F1527XP.jpg&hash=47b8c0c2f70c3b69eee305c5cde477c0b3fc2fd3)

also, made an "end cap" on mine, kind of looks like so:

now my question, how do the perforations effect sound? the more holes the more it quiets sound? or less holes less sounds? or does it have an effect on tone whether its lower or higher?

Capri.....

what where you talking about again?... I have assumed that the one with more holes would keep the sound down. but also curious.

I know if it was glass packs and louvered hole have to be facing the right direction.

More holes less flow restriction

I would think that the more holes give more escape for the sound to go threw and into the packing. keeping it quite.

where did you get that baffle with the shit ton of holes?

the size of the muffler body and the packing material will have more of an impact on sound deadening than the number of holes, but yeah, more holes will increase the efficiency.

This, volume of chamber, volume of packing, density/absorption of packing, number and size of perforations is about all that needs to be considered for a diy muffler.

Also, the shape of the holes has an effect as well.

Looks restrictive as fuck. What are you trying to gain?

Look at how FTE diesel does their resonators.
