Title: 65 Nova Build
Post by: carkrazed on December 01, 2016, 06:48:26 PM
Whats up fuckers. Been awhile. Got a new project and figured i'd make a thread to keep me motivated.

Some of you probably remember this car. I helped a buddy build a couple years back. Forged 358, scratch build manifold, TH400 with 3500 stall/trans brake, etc

Well......he wasn't doing anything with it so I got a pretty good deal on it. It sat outside covered for 4 years now so i'm gonna tear it all back down and build it the way I want.

Immediately brought it home and started tuning. When I left off, it was pretty much just running so I wanted to make sure the engine was still good.

I got it running better but something still wasn't right with it. Sometimes it would rev clean, other times it would pop and snarl at me and it was just rough in general. I was pretty confident the engine was in good shape so I said fuck it, lets tear it down.

Pulled the front end off. My buddy used steel fenders and a fiberglass nose. I wasn't sure about it at first but I think I'm gonna finish it. Make it a two piece pin on front end.

Dirty and corroded. Definitely didn't look like this the last time I worked on it.

Got the charge pipe off and it was black inside. Smelled like exhaust fumes. Thought.......well that's weird.

Popped open the throttle body and found this little fella staring at me............

Fucking Blue Point gasket knife down in #7 intake runner. Fucker was jammed in there too. Probably been in there since its first fire. Who knows how it came to be there.

So.....i'm sure that explains why I couldn't get it running right.

Pretty pumped now though. Ordered a mustang 2 front end and an engine plate for it last night.

Probably gonna get a decent set of aluminum heads and some other shit for the engine. Triangulated 4 link the rear. Mini tub it and get the body down over the tires.

fuckin awesome. everyone has a nova now!  :noel:

cant wait to see this unfold... whats the plan with the steering wheel? can i have it  :mexi: LOL.

so if i remember right you did a bunch of fab work to this a long as time ago. you built an intake manifold, fuel rails, waterneck, etc? pretty much connected all the pieces to get the motor that was in the car boosted? what ECU was/is this thing running?

excited to see updates!

Yep, that's the one. I pretty much did everything under the hood with help from my Dad and the previous owner.

It ran before I started pulling it apart. Couldn't quite get it running right (see above, lol). Still didnt run that bad though. ECU is MS2 Extra with 3.0 board. Wasted spark with ford coil packs.

I got some cool plans for this so i'm pretty pumped. This will be my first build that i'll have more than a shoestring budget too.

You can have that fucking steering wheel. Pay shipping......

When I did have it running. I noticed that when I revved it pretty good, the top panel of the plenum would flex in and out. Too big of a span for 1/16" material I guess.

So, I'm gonna redo the plenum.

Drew this up tonight.

Ya, similar to the top plenum on this manifold here.

This the one you grafted a subframe off a different body style nova to?

So jealous, this is the body style I love but my wife hates and the true reason is they want gold around here.

I was just gonna ask if this was the one that had the 68 style subframe welded on it?

What m2 kit/brand did you buy?

Ya, this is the one. It actually worked out pretty well but I don't wanna fuck around with it. Stupid heavy anyways.

What m2 kit/brand did you buy?

I got a CPP kit. I've read some mixed reviews but figured I'd give it a shot. I'm sure I can make up for the shortcomings.

It was like 1800 with steering, brakes, etc. Manual rack and drop spindles. Wish it had coilovers.

Started getting some parts in.

Hope to have this thing done by the summer. Start cranking on the escort next winter.

I'm gonna need a bigger garage......

Got the front end parts in yesterday. Gonna spend all weekend on it.

After looking into several 4 link kits and what size tire I can fit with stock frame rails, I think I've decided to back half it.

Looking at this kit http://www.checkeredracing.com/4LinkBackHalf.html (http://www.checkeredracing.com/4LinkBackHalf.html)

After pricing out shocks and everything I need to fix up the current setup, this is gonna be cheaper anyways.

Well, if you don't count the new wheels and tires I'm gonna need.

Fuck......this is getting expensive.

Fuck......this is getting expensive.

i think that may be why Chad's car is still stock aka never started building... maybe he is the smarter of the group lol.

after evaluating my goals, i came to the conclusion that i can do burnouts/donuts just fine on a 235-245 tire. doesnt need 275+  :Jew:

Decided to just pull the front subframe, engine and tranny in one shot. It's ready to come out. Hoist was supposed to be delivered today but FedEx can't drive in the snow.

Any update?

Got the engine/tranny out and the front end off. Been working some crazy hours trying to get a project wrapped up. Its pretty much done so I'm gonna take thursday and friday off. Have myself a car weekend.

Had to order a set of heads today.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/drt-127422 (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/drt-127422)

Been doing some engine research since chevy v8's have never been my thing. Turns out, the cam that the previous owner bought for this engine shouldn't even be run on the 70's era iron heads that are on it. Everyone says the max is .500" of lift and this cam has .563"

http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=235&sb=2 (http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=235&sb=2)

Seen some positive reviews on the DART SHP heads and my dad was able to get em through one of his suppliers for $475 a piece. Should wake this engine up.

Spent all day getting the firewall cleaned up. Patching holes, etc. It's pretty close so hopefully I'll be starting on the front clip tomorrow.

102mm lsx ebay throttle body. It's actually a really nice piece.

Local fab shop got a waterjet so I drew up some brackets for the engine plate and alternator. Didint turn out too bad. Still gotta do a little fitting on the alternator bracket.

Cut the plenum off the manifold and cut out the pieces for the new plenum.

Made some patterns with the laser. Worked pretty slick.

Yo!! Still working on this. Got a lot done since the last time I posted. Tore some shit in my knee the other day so i'm confined to the couch. Figured i'd update this. Working on the brakes and putting floor pans in it now. Then its off to get body work done. Neighbor guy is a 30 year body guy so I worked out a deal for him to do it.

Prett much everything is identical as planned but ended up swapping the cam after I got it running. It was wayyy too big. Got a custom grind roller setup from Comp. Ended up with more lift but less duration and overlap which is what it needed.

Thanks bro! Taking forever but it is what it I guess. Hard to find time to work on cars these days.

Have to start shopping for wheels now. Probably going to do a 4 link in the rear and I want a wide wheel with lots of negative offset. Hope I don't need to narrow the rear. Never did anything like that before.

This is kinda the look I'm aiming for.

Right! It's an autocross car too. Pretty impressive build out of a place in Pittsburgh.

Really easy. Summit sells a sweet pair of straightening/bending pliers. This is just the 1/4" aluminum they sell. It's almost as cheap as rubber hose.

Just bought some of that Nickel/copper line to do my brake lines. Supposed to be super easy to work with too.
