Title: RHMMC - Real Homemade Man Cave build thread
Post by: Joseph Davis on August 08, 2020, 02:44:18 PM
The daughter moved out and I hate cars, so here goes.

It's a tiny room.  6 feet by 11 and change added on at some point, awkward 180* entryway through the second bathroom that prevents me from moving just anything in and out.  Specifically the sweet old school steel desk I could have gotten for beans two miles away.

So, steam cleaned the carpet and started hunting for shit to put in it.  I ended up with a cheap L desk in like new condition for $75 off Marketplace.  I threw up some black out drapes and pushed it into the corner.

I reckon I needed dual monitors.  Dunno what a man does with more than one monitor, but we are flexing on poors here.  With a $75 desk budget.  One that will probably sag over time with a dual monitor mount.  It wouldn't be RHM-whatever this place is if some poor choices weren't made along the way.  Anyway. I had a terrorist type individual that I know - think of a fully functional buk who isn't afraid to shave or do a situp - make a brace.  Enjoy my mspaint drafting ability, that CAD class in college has paid off.

Slather it with wood glue and clamp it on there... waiting for it to dry is lame so proceed with the drilling.

It isn't collapsing under it's own weight... which is surprising for something I did involving wood.

So, I wanted a Proline Bench-in-a-box, but the sweet cantilevered ESD topped ergonomically terrific goodness didn't offset the $1500 price tag.  Okay.  Everything used is beat.  All wood is cumbersome - have to build it in the room, dismantle it in the room at some later date.  Amazon had some reviews on tables I couldn't see or touch that seemed okay.  Build my own?  The 8020.net extruded aluminum stuff is awesome on paper, but not as rigid in real life and apparently also costs $1500.  The pipe desk thing with butcher block top seemed cool, but nah.  Ikea, more of the same.  Finally picked a 72" height adjustable Husky work bench with drawers that took too long to ship.

I ordered one of the Husky work bench tops to make a kitchen table out of. Bought a set of steel hairpin legs and bolted them on. Good to go.

The next step for this room Dr. Davis is utilizing the vertical space. That looks like an 8' ceiling, you've got at least 16" to spare above your head.

btw where is the sex swing going to go?

I would have bought a significantly thicker piece of 72" butcher block for $168 if I went the DIY route.  Industrial strength legs/center brace from Grainger are cheap and also plentiful in the yards.

6'9" soooo... no.

btw where is the sex swing going to go?

I had another kid so I can't afford to have sex ever again.   :?:

Anyway, guess it's time for an update...

I am ~5 years out of the soldering and circuit game and miss it.  My eyes started sucking, usual middle age farsightedness, and I lost half of my gear with Redline.  But, thanks to modern technology, that totally doesn't matter anymore.  Behold: my soldering microscope.

Anyway, you are all a bunch of communists.

I bought the top rated cheap fluorescent off Amazon, used three of the six 4' sticks that cost me $43.  They were really light weight and felt cheap, but they just hold their own weight so going to be fine.

Cable management is important (beyond not seeing them bear with me).  I bought a Staples clone of the Aeron, very nice.  Also bought a glass chair mat, too small.  :(

Seems like the only way I'll see any of this is to drive my ass up to Asheville.

Which may happen in the near-ish future as long as the whole covid thing is reasonable up there. I'm not big into following the left's rules on that shit.
