So I hate the gangster lean half core radiator that I have in my crx. And it started to leak some. I know that as soon as I boosted my car that it was going to overheat. I have seen it so many times, big boost, stock half core, and a b18 in a crx. :-X But I need the room, whats a rhmt'er to do? So after alot of looking around I came up with this.
The radiator is 24.5"X12.5"X 1.5" Core is 1.5X12X20.5 = 369ci it also has 1 1/4" in and out, unlike the civic half core that has 1 1/8" also the stock half core core is around 1"X14"X14" 196ci
Radiator $50 shipped
So the radiator is for a 85 Volkswagen Scirocco I got it frome here (the brand is Nissens part# W0133-1610603)

SO first things first, drain your coolent and pull your shitty ass half core out.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3501.jpg&hash=1449bf91e62528487d25db7b11598e769ca6345f)
Now that youve done that, you are going to need to mod your hood latch support bar. First score the 3 bolts where the latch assembly bolts up so you can get your hood to latch when your done.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3489.jpg&hash=a7ed005651d2bf09c1a031403f659c8ec56137b7)
Now pull the 3 10 mm bolts out, and squeeze the 2 plastic clips and and now your cable and latch us free from the support. Undo the 4 10mm bolts that hold the assemble to the headlight area, and the 1 10mm bolth that is attached to your lower support. Clamp it ito the vice, and now pull out the drill
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3491.jpg&hash=c0551286b5323e0f044713d277b3102806db4d8a)
Now I used a step bit to drill out the 4 spot welds that hold the upright support on, You will be getting rid of this to make room for your new radiator.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3492.jpg&hash=790e91a2811af6bb788ddcd35e91154a0c48c421)
Now I used a flat head screw driver and worked it in between the support upright and the latch bar. I took my time on this because I did not want to bend the latch support up to bad.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3494.jpg&hash=407ee860e62f2a3fa42fd5d3592e4140e2bc0da8)
Now go ahead and bolt the hood latch back onto the support bar and test your hood to make sure it closes and opens.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3501.jpg&hash=1449bf91e62528487d25db7b11598e769ca6345f)
Ok with that done I now went onto the task of mounting on the tabs to hold the radiator in place.
So I took the 2 rubber grommets and slipped them into the washers and put them onto the bottom of the radiator.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3503.jpg&hash=77966306ec6afa75231bc9c3977e79a7c9a42d15)
and I held it upto where I needed it. I made some marks on the traction bar of where the washers hit it. I pulled the grommet out and tacked 1 of the washer into place with my welder. Let it cool down and put the grommit back in.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3504.jpg&hash=90df45aa4c3be782ef666d7f6296398e60ce4c0f)
After I test fitted it, I double checked my other washer marks and pulled the grommet out and tacked the other washer into place.
Now I need to keep the top of the radiator from flopping around. So I had some scrap lying around.
Cut it down and drilled a hole in it. And grabbed a screw I had lying around too.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3521.jpg&hash=97c94569ea542cac182ecfdd80ebf0df43966b3d)
Now I saw just where I wanted it monted up.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3523.jpg&hash=f3f88b58b1e64cd42d7d329ea94dd2e46afaf015)
Well with my awsome welding skillz :-* and some oil that I had sitting in between the sheetmetal from a previous busted oil feed line it turned out somthing like this :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3525.jpg&hash=3b5547c02edaca96471070d706558e254add4feb)
I used the stock 91 teg lower radiator hose and it worked perfect. For the upper hose I used 1 91 teg upper hose, and a piece of another teg upper hose.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3513.jpg&hash=b31dc97e811da4911fa3aae8ba5f2b0b3ae1cff5)

Now there is a nipple off of the radiator so I took a vaccume cap and a hose clamp and threw it on there.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3526.jpg&hash=8167835d9006281caec3b346ff5a6ee5f3af825b)

I then put my slim line fan on and put it back together.
Well see how it dose over the next few days but so far it seems great. and it tucks up under the support and out of the way of my turbo and downpipe.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP3516.jpg&hash=a5d18f9d105f7a40bc7b5c05b5d7c84a8f82534a)

why the Hate for the Gangsta Lean ???
Its not that i hate it, its just it dosent cool the greatest. This is just a better solution than the halfcore, imo.
-
Regardless of lean, more cooling capacity = win. Nice work man.
-
Good shit! I have been waiting for this thread ever since the talk of you doing this... Now its done and looks really good.... Great job....

Thanks guys, This whole thing started because I wanted more room for a downpipe, and I didnt want a chance of overheating.
-
tite
slap some bondo on that weld and hit it with the rattle can
-
Awesome write up. That is damn good out of the box thinking. Nice shit
-
Awesome! I think I may end up going this route as well for my CRX!
-
Sticky icky icky!

shit looks good
how do you think it would fit with the stock crossmember?
That was going to be my next adventure is to do it on a stock setup. I just need to take a few measurements. If you want to take them I will tell you if they will work.
-
I'm too lazy to look up your build thread but where is your intercooler?
-
He's missing more than just an intercooler... :P
Really cool idea, too bad I'm done with EF's. Unless you get a manifold that puts the WG off the front (like most retarded ramhorn makers do), you should fit almost anything and have tons of cooling capacity. Assuming you use some sort of coating or heat wrap.
-
I'm too lazy to look up your build thread but where is your intercooler?
Dont have it yet, but im gona pick this one up

-
It will fit in front of that scirocco rad?
-
Yep with about 1" from the charge pipe to the edge of the radiator. Another one intercooler that would fit perfect would be a stock srt4 intercooler
-
Solid work man!!!
-
looks good, but one question. why not just run the factory full length?
seriously not hating just woundering?
-
looks good, but one question. why not just run the factory full length?
seriously not hating just woundering?
This setup gives you more room than the factory full length rad since it basically sits about where the condenser would normally be.
-
Hey, when I get back, we can measure up the Rising Sun Wonder and see if it will work with the stock cross member.

Right on, sounds good!
-
How much bumper will need to be trimmed for that intercooler? Is there room to go taller?
-
Wow great work that is a excellent setup for a EF.I used a Neon half rad before in mine as its shorter then a EG one so no gangster lean but that rad should cool really nice. :noel:
-

There is room to go taller, but I dont really want to go taller because im not gona hack my front bumper up. The intercooler you are looking at will fit infront of my rad, and I can still get my bumper on without cutting anymore that what has already been cut.

I was looking at the neon rad, but it was still gona need a gangster lean due to my huge fucking traction bar. I could have lowerd the traction bar, but then I know I would be hitting shit when driving down logging roads I go camping on.
-
The Hybrid kids used to do that 12+ years ago, in the Socal area. They'd get all aluminum Sirocco radiators from Slummit and get to fabbing, like the upscale yuppies they were.
I sure am glad radiators are $0.59 these days.
-
you bastard....
where were you before i did this?

Seen this in person at the meet
Very clean and does provide a lot of room.
Good job on making turbo crx's cool down more efficiently now.
-
Nice, def better than the lean
-
what fan or temp switch is it you used to plug the hole on the radiator with?
-
The plug/fan switch was from a stock vw. I think jd said it was a 22mm bolt.
-
Hows it running? Have you had any overheating issues or anything?
-
So one week I mocked up my intercooler, That same weekend I went for a road trip. Said fuck it and ran the car na with the ic on. Its flat balck so its not like im trying to pose that I have a turbo car(yet)....lol
Eveything was good untill I got in a bunch of stop and go traffic for about 15+min. It then tried to start overheating. So I pulled over and took the ic off in some albertsons parkinglot....lol After that no problem the rest of the trip.
Got home and I was watching my temps and loging them for about a month just the way it was. Now my temps in stop and go were right around 200* to 206* ish.
So I decided to hardwired my fan.
I just unpluging the 2 wires on the coolent sensor thats on the back of the block. Once I did that, I made a jumper to plug the two wires together and now when my key is on, so is my fan. People always complane about how long its gona take to heat up. ::)
Shits up to full temp in under 10 min Sit in my driveway for about 5 and let the car warm up some, and then drive lightly on it untill it gets up to temp. (about another 5min This is also in 38*-45* ambient temps)
I then put a 170* t-stat in and I haven put the ic back on yet.
So with those 2 things done, in stop and go my temps sit right around 185* and at cruise its around the 175*
This is also all done in about 75*-85* ambient temps.
Im curious to see how it dose with my car turboed, but thats probalby gona get put on hold untill after december or so. :'(
-
I've put a switch in mine. In the winter I rarely open the fan. In summer I start it when I'm in traffic or when the temp is going up.
You just need a loud fan so you know that it still on when you stop the car OR a switch with a light ;)
-

Im a dumbass and I KNOW I would forget to turn the fan on, and By the time I got around to turning it on my car would be on fire.....lol
-
LOL in my case, I always forget to shut it off.
I get out of the car and Oh, I hear the fan.
-
Only getting warm when sitting still = shitty fan, not the IC acting as blockage. Some CRX/IC combos get hot only when cruising, due to zero airflow across the radiator.
-
Jd Im sure thats part of it, I have a set of some kick ass 10" fans that weigh about 10lbs each that I was gona try and put 1 of them on and see how it goes. If I could have fit the stock fan on I would have put it on, as I know its a good fan with a shroud.
-
Yeah, Ive been running my scirroco for awhile now with an intercooler non turbo and have been having overheating issues below 45mph. But I have one shirtty fan. I'm thinking about putting one on each side on opposite sides if that makes sense. I have to fix this issue before I boost it.
-

FUCK YOU I really need to take pics of my setup. The new IC should be here and I can finish mocking all that shit up, I'm really feeling the double backdoor setup.
-
take some pics and pm them to me
-
I'm really feeling the double backdoor setup.
That's what she said.
-
I'm really feeling the double backdoor setup.
Classic.
-
You want pics of my scirroco set up with the double back door? Its on a 92 four door so its a bit different than your set up. I already had that intercooler you want to use though. It was on my 1g talon I'm parting out. So I already have most of the piping. But that intercooler takes up the entire front end of the car and blocks all the flow to the radiator.
-
Go to my build thread, its on page 5 or 6 and you will see the intercooler im running, endtank-endtank i think its 35" long. the core is 24X9X2.75 i think, its been a while since i looked last, but i beleave its about that size. Only thing i have left to do to the ic is weld the newly opened holes for my 3" charge pipes. It came with 2.5 cast pipes cast into the end tank. The id of the pipe was like 2 1/8" =(
-
My fan plug doesn't work on my crx and I can't figure out why. I may get around to using this little unti right here.

I havent used that exact one, but it looks to be alot better than the shit they sell at vatozone. you know, the one with the probe you fucking zip tie to your radiator. They are absolute garbage. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea?
-
Well had the last 2 days off with nothing to do so I decided to tackle the radiator fan shroud. I had to build one to make it fit. It never over heated but I know once summer gets here its just gona get heat soked and I will then be fucked. After doing a some tuning some street tuning I was seeing some 205*-207* And thats more than I want to see as its only 50* outside right now. So here are a few pics.
As it sits now.

So after all the metal cutting this is what my blade looked like.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP4604.jpg&hash=e0c09f88fad1cf7cda33893ea1c4c3f27d9f970d)

So I drilled a bunch of holes and used the angle grinder to cut the hole out.

And put some calking on it to seal it up.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh171%2Fiitru45%2Fcar%2520stuff%2FRadiator%2520install%2FIMGP4609.jpg&hash=ab456be91886c481de0aee0f604e456d99ba0322)
Put some paint on it and put some weather stripping on the radiator and some on the shroud around where the fan buts up to it. I have yet to install it because I ran out of time today. So It looks like I will be hitching aride to work tomorrow. :-[ Once its done I will post up some final pics and let you guys know what it dose to my temps.
-
Thanks, me too.
-
Eh, that sucks. Does the IC block a lot of the radiator? Some ducting to direct air through the rad is going to help lots, too.
-
The IC blocks I would say 60-70% of the radiator. I think with just a fan upgrade it would have been enough. But I dont want to chance it, and why do things twice. :-[
-
Never underestimate the effectiveness of a good shroud. Shit looks good nigger.
-
Your setup looks fucking sweet! Not like my getho ass setup lol
Mine give almost 3/4 inch of play after the cut. The tie wraps dryout and break because of the heat tho...

^^^Damn ghetto..... I LOVE IT!!!
Ratcity Shit is looking good, keep it up!
-
Why is that made out of such thick steel?
-
Its not real thing imo, its 16ga. And Im pretty sure I would fail at welding it, if it was any thiner :P
-
It looks liek 1/8" for some reason. don't mind me.
-

I know your a noobs and all, but excellent work on the fab skills. Is that some fluxcore action I see? You need a noon post like ASAP

But I second the fabbing. Looks like it was meant for a DA.
-
I've had the parts riding around in my trunk to do this for quite a few months, I have a da as well.
-
I ended up doing the samething, but aren't you worried about the lack of support now that there's no lower radiator support there?
I did a 1"x2" bar going across the front.
-
Dead but I want this.
-
May be dead but I know a project with an aluminum version of that radiator going a heavily boosted civic, thanks to this thread. :noel:
-
Mmm hmmm. Its a badass setup. My buddy is trying to talk me out of it.
Saying just to get a skank 2 or stock rad.
But this would be out a the way. And super JDM. : SD
-
FUck your buddy. He sounds like some douche bag VW owner. :noel:
-
Bump. I'll be doing this in my car with a stock crossmember.
-
Just ordered scirocco radiator, i'll try to make samething on my car.. just was wondering what hoses to use on my D16 SOHC engine..

Should be the same, since the outlets of radiator is on the same side as stock Civic.
-
sohc use 28mm if i remember correctly instead 32mm as b series and this scirocco radiator..i think it's time to weld aluminum too :noel: i will post pics when it arrives this week.

-
Hi! im in the point to adapt scirocco radiator, my question is about what hoses should i run because i want to use a silicone hoses.
I assume stock D series hoses will not works, does it?
-
One first page "I used the stock 91 teg lower radiator hose and it worked perfect. For the upper hose I used 1 91 teg upper hose, and a piece of another teg upper hose."
Also used an inline radiator filler for the upper hose. :noel:
