That is some clean work you did on those quaters..... How much did the new sheet metal cost?
Looks good ;D
-
awesome build. super clean 8)
-
Car is so damn clean. Very happy to have parts of mine on this build.
-
I thought you installed that mani already? Great build. Can't wait to see what it puts down.
-
Thanks for the feedback. :)
Solid build. Did you prep those SRP pistons before installation? The last time I used a set, they had some very sharp edges. Had to use a dremel tool to fix them.
I used emery cloth and sent them to get the face thermal coated.

My friend Joe welded them up for me. I got the rockers off egay for $50 each and the quarter patches were $100 each.

Now that I have the Jeep WJ as my daily, I dont have the pressure to get the Civic finished.
My job had me really busy this past winter and now we have a 5 month old baby, so I dont have the free time I used to have. Most of the parts to assemble the motor are here, but, I really want to get the body of the car finished and painted. I dont feel so concerned leaving my car at the shop being that it has no motor. :P

-
Thanks, I had the JE pistons thermal coated and put them back in.
-
hey dude, is that the block i sold you like 2-3 years ago? haha
-
Yes sir
-
Where'd you find those pieces for the quarter panels? I've got rust in all the exact same places that I want to fix and some pre-formed panels would save a shitload of time...
Clean set up by the way...hope mine comes out even half as nice as that.

-
Nice.... Now do my car. Lol
And mine while your at it ;)
how are you with EGs?
Rust=weight reduction
I've always wondered if it does. I want to take a plate of metal with a known weight, and then let it rust, and reweight it to see if it gets heavier because of the oxidation. Naturally if the rust eats holes, then it probably is definatley lighter
-
nice save on the body, did you use anything on the new metal to prevent it from rusting again?
-
GL with overheating issues.
Im tired of 90f days owning me, and sitting in the car with the blower motor on 4. lol
-
Epoxy primer sealer will treat the bare metal and affected areas.

3M Guide Coat Kit Howto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3B4VWA4cE4#lq-hq-vhq)
-
How fucking old IS that video? LOL.
Fuck it, spray paint works fine. I only use that dry guide coat when Im too lazy to mask off the glass... Otherwise, thinner works fine, or most of the time, Im blend prepping where my overspray goes.
And that Hook It II shit is great... for them to make money. Shit just clogs twice as fast, so you use twice as many discs, and it costs more... 3M Gold with a Stick It pad FTW.
-
Have you tried Mirka paper?
It's pretty bad ass. We used about half of it compared to the 3m stuff.

Dynod 360hp at 20psi with the Precision 3431 turbo. 2.5 Bar MAP limited me from upping the boost. Pics to follow.

congrats man how does it feel
-
Thanks, I haven't driven it yet but it sounds pretty mean. I'm goin to put the glass back in and get it to Island on wednesday or Friday.

Solid #'s. Should lay down 11's pretty damn easy. Time for a cage!

Goooo Joeee!!
i might be down for Island on Sunday.
-
Now that is a sexy mess of a shitheap. I love it.
-
Loven it!! Nice numbers for 20 psi on another sohc d!! Are you still running the water injection?
-
might come across as a "shitheap" now but i bet that thing will be PRISTINE shortly
-
No Alky inj just C16 race fuel this time.
-
Went to Island and ran 12.0 @ 120mph. My personal best so far.
-
Street tires?
-
lol no, I was using 10psi on 22in slicks. I need a lot more seat time and practice.
-
That's not bad for 10 psi, sir.
-
Nice trap speed!!!!!! Much faster times will follow with more seat time for sure. Should push right into the 11's with ease.
-
It took some getting used to shifting at 8k RPM. I never drove with slicks before and what a big difference. It pulls you back in the seat! I wasn't trying to launch as much as getting the car down the track. I kept hitting boost cut and blowing vac lines off the manifold. So after I turned the boost down and secured the vac hoses with zip ties I ran the 12.0.
I gotta say driving a FWD car at the drag strip is no easy task. I'm glad Joe E., John, and Steve's friends were there to give a hand and help me out b/c I was getting a little frustrated at first.
-
hell yeah! 120mph!!
-
Any updates?

So far I picked up a set of RC 750s and had injector rehab clean them.

Solid. Im so excited to be going back out to the track again next year after almost 3 years. Keep us updated on pics etc. This is a very well written/documented build.

the best built post ever the car is comeing out really clean good numbers to
-
how much did they charge you for the injector cleaning? Have a set of dsm 450's I need to have checked out.

nice times! all these sohc motors have been making some nasty power and pulling so pretty nice times at the track.
Congrats on a well done build thread

$54.00

Sticky bump :noel:

good to see the results on the injectors, guess i can rule out a dirty injector causing my motor to fail, even though they only had 500 miles on them
-
nice looks awesome where did you get the tubing from I almost want to attempt to build my own kit but I dont have a welder, did you do all the welds while it was in the car, what headers did you use, also it looks like you modified them a little near the collector, please do share more, sorry for all the ?s

MFactory LSD
Those things are supposed to be great, but I kinda of dislike their forum rep's posturing. He's not bad by any means, but he comes off like the GE rep only good natured and not intentionally dishonest. It's just the flavor of his posts remind me of GE (when not lying through his teeth) and it makes me a little meh.
Sorry for the threadjack.

After receiving the diff. I wanted to check to make sure the cover bolts were torqued to spec, so I emailed MFactory.
I received a response to contact Whoopee Doo Racing, which is MFactory's authorized installer. After a conversation I learned that the cover is torqued and thread locked. I was told that some upgraded shift forks are in the works as well.

Yeah, Chris lives an hour from me. I was supposed to tune a car for him, but then the whole Bisi thing went down and since he's one of their distributors I'm suspect he's decided not to contact me now.

which platform? cast aluminum p20 or the steel p4a?
-
dayum 120mph on 10psi? thats gotta be at least 320-330whp. pretty crazy for 10psi, pretty crazy indeed.
now match my time, 11.3 @ 120 :)
-
That's 10psi of air in my slicks, not psi of boost.
I think the forks are to replace the Z6 alum ones, but not positive.

Damn looking good. I think we need Bone in here.

Ok Im back to work on the trans, all is good. In error I was trying to install a spring washer and a thrust washer on the mainshaft giving me an incorrect reading. the 1989 trans I am using only uses a spring washer.

Mang, when I put new bearings in a z6 tranny, that fucking interlock thing took me probably an hour to get it right, maybe more. I didn't really take notice of it when I took it apart, and then I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't shift through the gears. fucking interlock thingy. Haste makes waste, eh? That transmission is clean as fuck, like I would either eat off of it, or put my penis inside it.
-
That transmission is clean as fuck, like I would either eat off of it, or put my penis inside it.
So let me get this right. You want to fuck a trani :?:

Did you have to the transmission in a certain gear or in neutral when you put the casing back on?
-
Joe DO WORK!
-
Ok the LSD trans is in the car with a new Autozone axles. Ill get pics up soon.
-
So how is it with the LSD? How does it feel to put power down with 2 wheels now?
-
I havent taken it to the track yet, Ill post up when I do
-
Joe made a 11.5 sec pass in my car, spinning the 22in slicks throughout 1st gear. I did 12.1 and the three other passes were vac hoses, charge pipes blowing off.
The last pass the car ran hot and overheated. Gonna check it out when I get a chance. Trailered it back home

Damn sounds like a good time. To bad I could make it, found out I had 2 finals the next day :?:.

Well, the knocking sound coming from the bottom end of the block leads me to believe the bearings are spun.
Motor will come out and I may toss a fresh set of Vitaras in.

if you need a crank I have a couple spare clean ones

Cool thanks I'll let u k ow what's up once I get the motor disassembled.

Anyone want to sell 1 Eagle D16 rod?
-
Joe you did some solid work right there :noel:
-
WOW....lol
-
Which rod was it?
-
Which rod was it?
I believe he said #4 when I spoke to him.
-
Yeah, his oil pump was shitcanned and pressure was falling off at the far end of the motor.
-
The day at the track the car got really hot on the 5th pass and then temp went back to normal. After making another pass the car overheated and began to knock. The #2 piston/rod is where the damaged occurred. The last build I used an ebay oil pump which did a lot of damage to the cylinder head, specifically the cam and cam caps. I have currently been using an OEM Honda oil pump that I ported and shimmed.
I really wanted to use the same pistons, but, b/c the wrist pin appears to be bent, and the corner of the crown/ringland look damaged, Im probably gonna put a set of Vitaras that have been thermal coated, and a new set of Eagles.
When I was removing the ARP head studs, I noticed pieces of threads that were in the block. I assume that torquing the head over and over to 85ft lbs took its toll. Timesert and Helicoil make kits but are kind of costly. I have to ask the machine shop for the labor rate.
I also removed the thermostat (had to be gutted actually), to help coolant flow jic the overheating was coolant related.

-
i haven't followed thsi one closely, so bare with my ignorance. If the block isn't sleeved, then having time Serts(far superior to Helicoils) would cost more than sourcing another block and having it machined.
I know it isn't cheap when we Time Sert Northstars.
Why in the hell were you torquing the head studs to 85 ft-lbs? D16 studs are only M10, and ARP only recommends 70 ft-lbs with 30 weight oil on the 220,000 psi rated hardware. The head studs are heat treated to 200,000 pis.
-
Yeah, I admit I made them too tight. I thought more would cause less head lift but it was the head gasket becoming compressed during the heat cycles.
I have a spare block, but I'm trying to avoid notching the block and girdle for the Eagle rods. Lol

that takes like half an hour with a die grinder on nog setting. it doesn't weaken anything, why wouldn't you want to do it?
-
Air Grinder, gotta pick one of those up from Harbor Freight. Last time I used a drill with a cutting bit. Took me a couple of days. :P

In my experience anything under 75 ft lbs for head torque on a high boost D is trouble.
I used to daily drive my car at 20 psi and it would blow the HG like its going out of style until I started to torque to 85-90.
Never had a problem again. Even on 30 psi.

That's a pretty broad statement, and if head stud torque were your concern you'd know a little bit more about it and be very specific which 85-90 ft/lbs you're talking about, because at the end of the day that very much isn't indicative of the clamping force in the system.
-
I'm going to find out if I can o ring my stock block.

With what kind of lubricant on the threads?
This is exactly how internet myths start.
-
Exactly.
Next thing you know, Honda rods will have weak rod bolts because some riceboys forgot to tighten them.
-
damn this is a good built! hope u get it running again! i want to do someting similar but around 200-250whp range.

Listen im no expert. Never claimed to be.
I know I set my fucked up craftsman torque wrench to 90 and go for it. Havent blown a HG since. If it has stayed intact for some other reason all I can hope for is the same gift.
Happy JD ? Jerk

Quit micro analyzing my thread you turd burglars.
I ordered :
a new Eagle rod,
1 SRP piston,
4 new piston rings,
a set of ARP pressure plate, and flywheel bolts,
ACL bearings,
OEM oil pump, strainer, head gasket, oil pan gasket, and a couple of oil filters.
I had a crank polished that I picked up from Ebola last year.
I was given a quote of $20 to coat the piston top with thermal coating, but I may just have him do my turbo housing, and exhaust manifold while he's at it.
Ill post pics up as the toys arrive.
Oh yeah, I spoke to Dennis from B&L Machine shop and he schooled me on o-ringing my block. I have decided to keep it stock and I will get retuned on my new 750cc injectors.
I hope to make it back to the track this year.
;)
-
do work.
plenty of time left

How much to coat the housing?

Nice to see you sticking with it.

5 bucks for piston coating not sure even the chinesse can match that price

Arp moly.

I figured. You strip the block using untapped holes w/ motor oil in the 80s. Please be specific with that tidbit of info.
Also, decked block milled head?

Yesterday I received my new STD King bearings, and, today I got the chance to install them. After I honed the cylinders with my Flex-Hone, I installed the crankshaft I picked up from eBola last year. Plasti gauged them and tolerances were within spec.

I've already done that enough for you to take note of. We've already discussed this twice to my knowledge. I was simply going to take this opportunity to fucking swear at you about it, again, do you have a goddamn problem with that, fuckface?
Damn, that came out all stilted and unnatural. Take all the fun out of it for me, Steve. >:(

This is the relay kit for my fuel pump I picked up from Chris.
I also bought a new Competition Clutch pressure plate. You can see the oild one was a single diaphragm siring and the new one is dual spring. I hope my cable or pedal assembly dosent break.

Looking good so far. ;D
Have you address the possibility of stretching the clutch cable from the tension supplied from the new pressure plate.
Like adding the spacer to cable slack adjuster.
-
Joe looking good!
-
I got curious, after you said a relay "kit", so I had to look. 25 bucks for a fuckin relay and some wiring with cheap butt connectors????? You can buy all of that from Wal Mart or Radio Shack for less, and have spools of wire and packages of butt connectors left over, plus buy some cheeseburgers when youre done.
-
Only use oem clutch cables!

Chris tuned my car today and made 309hp at the 15psi (wastegate spring). I think thats pretty good for $2.60 E85 fuel.
Before I was running C16 race fuel, which costs about $15 a gallon, and I made 319hp at 24psi of boost.
We were going to turn up the boost but after a compression test we noticed one cylinder was a bit low. We decided to leave it alone until I get the issue resolved.

Do a leak down test. Where did you get E85?
-
I'm going to try and pick up a leak down tester from HF. I am pretty sure it's the valves not properly seating, because I just honed and re-ringed the bottom end.
Chris had 10gals on hand from a local gas station near his shop.

So whats the update?

I ran an 11.9 granny shifting at Raceway Park on Sunday. Car runs well and I hope to get some more seat time during the season at test and tune days.
BTW outside temps were over 90 degrees.

Stop granny shifting ;)
-
Compression test today was bad news. Leak down test shows exhaust valve in #3 cyl needs to be checked. Gonna pull the head tomoro. Maybe its time for some Ferrea valves.
-
Update? Any thoughts of switching over to a 86-89 d16a1 trans?
-
Update? Any thoughts of switching over to a 86-89 d16a1 trans?
I have 2 cable 5speed D Series Si trans. in good condition. One has MFactory LSD installed, and it works beautifully.
As far as he engine, not so good. I couldnt get consistent compression test results, so I bought a leak down tester. The tester revealed exhaust valve leakage. I pulled the head to find the guides were worn and needed to be replaced. Im waiting to get it back and put it back together and do another compression test to make sure the bottom end is tight.
In the meantime I sent out to have the block you sold me sleeved by Golden Eagle.
-
SLEEVED? :o
-

Nice hum are we looking at a 500+ hp build in the works?
-
The turbo is good for over 500hp, but Ive been wanting to sleeve the block for a while now.
Once the motor is together, I want to turn up the boost and see what Chris can get out of it.
-
You should see if they can powdercoat the block for you.

I am still waiting for my head to come back from the shop. Dennis has been swamped. Once she is back together I wanna up the boost.

Are you going for over 400hp now?
-
Because I have no cage, I would like to run 11.6 while pedalling.
-
I took my head back from the machine shop b/c he hadnt worked on it since he was too busy. I have since lapped the valves and did a leak down test. The results were less than 15% loss in Cyl #3.
I will put everything back together to up the boost and get back on the track before the season ends.

Went to Island on Wednesday and ran a 12.1 in 90 degree heat. Car got hot so I let it cool down and ran another 12.1 which resulted in car running very hot. Coolant overflowed from the catch tank and I went home to work on a solution for the overheating.
I gotta find a spot to do some test runs without traveling so far.
I'm gonna head to HF to pick up a laser temp gauge to see if I need to do some changes to the cooling system.

Headgasket, or too much timing. Regardless, it needs a headgasket now.

I retorqued the headgasket. Im gonna see if it overheats again. If it does I will mill the head and replace the Head gasket
-
Thanks for the replies. Because I know nothing, I had the timing advanced 8 degrees. This was because when I assembled the head I zeroed out the cam gear to index the motor.
When the car was tuned the cam gear was retarded 4 degrees.
I'm going to move the cam gear and take it to the track to see if all is well.
-
pull the thermostat out
-
I went to Raceway Park and ran a 11.5 @ 121 which is a personal best for me. The car didnt overheat, but it sounds like a Subaru. My guess is the profuse smoke coming from the breather car means piston damage.

What is your piston to wall, and ring end gap? Was the engine held against a fuel cut limiter for any period of time?
-
What is your piston to wall, and ring end gap? Was the engine held against a fuel cut limiter for any period of time?
.005 P2W clearance,
Top ring Bore (2.94) x .0050"
Second Ring Bore x .0055"
Oil Rail Min. .015"
Fuel cut yes
-
By the textbook your piston wall is a bit too loose and ring end gap is perfect. However, the textbook wasn't written with small bore motors in mind. I'd rather have closer to 0.004" piston-wall, and we set ring end gap a little looser (0.017" and 0.018-0.019") with great results. None of this could be a problem for you, though. People have run looser piston to wall, and textbook ring end gap has worked for plenty of people. It'll be obvious if the ring end gap was the culprit, an edge of a ring will be bent from where it dug into the bore, will have broken a land.
But I don't think that's it at all. Post pics, I'm pretty sure you melted a side out of a piston, down through the ring package, exiting out near the pin along one side of the skirt.
-
Thanks JD I will post pics up when it is tore down yet again. :P

Dudeman who builds our engines just saw the pics. Look at that spec of shit between the first and second ring. His commentary below, read through for the logic.
- suspects those are moly coated rings (what rings are those?)
- moly rings should never be used in anything that could possibly detonate
- moly rings start as a steel ring, and a groove is cut into the face + then filled with moly. Usually you can see where the moly ends right next to the ring gap (can't see the gaps on your pistons)
- moly is super hard, and brittle. When detonated bits of moly pop free and start scoring the bore.
- the edge of the valve relief looks pitted from detonation. (We compared to both sets of YCP Vitaras I have here, which have very smooth sharp edges along the reliefs. I was given instructions to cut that down and blend it with a die grinder.)
There's also really uneven ring seating taking place - look how the face of the rings along the skirt sidehas fully seated against the cylinder wall, yet towards the side the top ring has carbon along the top? And the second ring is all over the fucking place. I pointed it out and got "yeah, I noticed that." I asked what caused it and got "couldn't say, a lot of stuff" then he excused himself to get more work done. Maybe Passenger could be buttonholed for some insight.
Oh yah, we also compared the Rik rings that came with my Speedfactory sourced YCPs and the other rings (Hastings or NPR unknown) with the set I bought secondhand that I ASSume came from FJT (and therefore would be NPR since they are in loose plastic cellowraps and there's no Hastings box ? ). What I have all look to be crome coated steel rings even if they are different, on FJT's site they list the Hastings as chromoly rings which got a comment of "no such thing" from machinist dude.
-
Joe you had shit luck with srp pistons I think its time for something else.
-
SRP? Okay, I'm drunk I thought they were Vitaras. That shouldn't be a molt ring, but that IS debris.
-
Thanks for your input Joey. I had shown the damaged piston to Dennis at B&L Machine Shop and when I told him my ring end gap, he told me to go bigger. .024" (This is what SRP recommends for Nitrous Race) No biggie. I had issues in the past with overheating, and this may be a relative factor
A new set of JE rings will be installed using larger ring end gaps. I going to send the head to get milled to ensure straightness.
Steve, as for the SRP pistons being problematic, I personally can say that I have been using the same pistons for quite some time. I have reused them after a few catastrophic failures and they are still holding up.
Pics below are the damaged piston that I began to clean.

SRP's were crap a decade ago, they dropped ringlands quicker than stock pistons. In the last 4 years they are exactly what they should be, and I would rock them in my personal car. SRPs rock JE rings, which are a hardened ring.

I want to keep the low-buck theme, so, I spray painted a fender to see how it would look. I will be spray painting the rest of the car when the weather warms back up.

Joe did you do a 8 point or 10 point cage? S & W? I think there having a black friday sale I might take advantage of.

I picked up a new 4-puck Comp. Clutch disc and a Mazworx scatter shield that I plan on installing. New slicks are in order also, the 22" ones did what they were intended to do. 23" M&H and high boost next season to get into the tens or low 11's.
Once again, painting the body will not be a priority yet. But, I would like to finish it up.

Oh yea!

Looks good cant wait to see it done!

If your going to leave the hole in your filler piece between the hood and bumper I would get that door edging that you see all the :mexi: Buy in chrome (they sell it in black too) And put it around the hole. It will finish it off just a bit and not look like you just grabbed your tin snips and went to town on. Other than that I think its coming along real nice!

I try to take the car out for a spin when the weather is nice, but, no nothing else has been done.

CSS block is slowly being assembled with CP pistons. Just sent out the trans to WhooPeeDoo Racing.
-
Wow. Awesome to hear you still have this car.
-
Yeah, I've had the car for a while now. The head had a bent valve, which was replaced. New valve seals were put in, and milled the surface. The Comp cam was sent to DDTech for repair and it will be coated. My trans was rough going into gear, so I sent it to get looked at. The shift fork and synchro was worn. Replacing both. I'm currently running a Precision 3431, which I will try to sell. I would like to get a ball bearing 5858 or 6262. My JE pistons that I removed from the running engine are also going to be sold, because I have a new set of CP's. The new set up will probably be tuned on Hondata. Im saving up and building it slowly in my spare time.
-
Just reread this thread, needs more updates :noel:
-
Got it running today. Now I need to get it tuned with the Hondata S300.

Car made 380 hp and runs well. I haven't been to the track but I picked up a 1985 RX7. I put the Civic up for sale on ebay for $5000.
