im planning a build only its N/A back to the days of flintstone.
a pedal car. foot power son!
its for my baby boy and ill be taking a while to build it.
heres what ive got so far. 6in wheels for the front 7's for that back.
square tubing (aluminum) for the frame
some metal rod for pedal and steering
and a 4x12 sheet of aluminum for $25 thats gonna be the body.
im planning on doing a 1932 5 window coupe.
im trying to design the steering but having a hell of a time figuring out a basic steering mechanism without making control arms. any ideas. the old school ones use a really good basic design but i cant find a pic of it on the web.
-
keep it light or your boy is going to be pissed. ;D
-
heres a couple front ends

+1 to this just use angle aluminum, even aluminum square tubing gets heavy
build this for the little guy, and start him of early.

yeah this is why im trying to go as basic as possible.
like the steering needs to be basic.
i just figured it out. it'll have 4 elbow joints with pins keeping them in place.
maybe ill post a pic of the design.

That is so fucking badass.
-
It would be even more badass if you build a miniature CRX.

That is so fucking badass.
i hope that's a girl wearing those shoes and posing like that.
no son of mine is gonna pose on a car like a faggot.
men either stand next to their car or get out of the picture
Can you get those shoes at the dollar store?
-
Can you get those shoes at the dollar store?
NO
niggers, beaners and white trash don't wear those shoes.
only rich white people or wannabe rich white people do.
Uhhh, if his dad is baller enough to build that, I would venture a guess that he probably isn't hurting for money.

who is talking about the kids dad?
i said that only rich white people and wannabe rich white people wear those shoes. those two types of people don't shop at dollar stores, so why the fuck would the dollar store sell those shoe.
for all i know the kids dad is a rich white person, fuck i don't even care about that.
just as long as he's happy his son is a faggot.
Oh ok, so if your dad is rich, your not considered to be well off, because you are not your dad. Especially at 8 or so years of age.
Can't beat that dollar store logic.
:noel:

Carry on Mike. Carry on.

heres my steering.
there will be 4 elbow joints
hard for me to explain the rest since i dont know the exact terminology

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Dollar store logic does that to people. just wait for the "I was only joking about the bike/dumbassery cause my wife's got aids wah wah wah" thread next week.
everyone hates you mike.
-
no son of mine is gonna have a toy like that because i'm too busy shopping for hot pockets and living off my mom's ssi
-
That sketch looks like a downs syndrome kid drew it mid seizure. I can't tell what the fuck is going on there.
-
no son of mine is gonna have a toy like that because i'm too busy shopping for hot pockets and living off my mom's ssi
Mikes son is gonna be a manly man just like his old man. a dollar store shoppin, Hot pocket eating, beach cruiser motor bike having, non car posin, Manly man with NO job.

actually my dad would remind you of johnny just a little less paranoid. a tiny bit less
he worked in factories all his life, lifetime member of NRA, afraid of zombies, all the awesome that I'll never achieve.

That's pretty fucked up, even by my standards. Well done.

I think it needs to be a little bigger. Also, put an engine on it. Preferably with a horsepower rating of around ten. For safety, put a governor on it, and your kid will gain an interest in mechanics quickly by figuring out how to disable it to he can haul ass.
-
ha ha, i was gonna say it's a little small.
10 hp is probably a little much, should toss a 80cc(66cc) 2stroke motor in it like the one i have on my bike.
I think 5-10 is about perfect, especially if its nerfed down in a variety of ways (throttle linkage not opening to full, governor, etc). You could make it like a puzzle for him to figure out how to make it haul ass. Like the go-karts at six flags that if you know the guy running the ride can go 50mph with the governors disabled.
-
hahaha i think im gonna keep it leg pwr'd for now. its more of a toy/stroller for now.
im making it way bigger on poster board. just drew up the sides and will be cutting them out soon.
ive got a lot on my plate so this will be taking a while to finish
-
Sick idea, hopefully you will actually finish it.

its coming along.
although its taking a way back seat to my subaru getting finished.
this is as of today.
-
I would love to make one for my son.
-
thanks guys.
im thinking about making two since i have the templates already and ill be cutting the sheet aluminum. might as well do two right.
-
yeah thats a good idea.
maybe just post it on ebay and see how high it goes.
-
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y166/kenada/DSCN3207.jpg)
made the grill a little more realistic. and started in on the hood.
as you can tell ive only just started the hood. its not even cut. just bent into place.
ill be cutting it out of the sheet aluminum as soon as i get this one all mocked up perfectly.
btw this will be my first time working with sheet in this fashion.
-
Sweet!

Awesome idea.
I hope you address the sharp edges and corner of the Al sheet metal b/c kids can find any sharp corner imaginable. :?:
-
I hope your kid is responsible.. My First Go kart was all wood and made in 30 min for a reason...
-
yeah it'll be more for pushing him around at car shows at first. then ill let him cruise it supervised. hahahaah.
then when he's too big its getting put away.
-
I'm sure you've thought of this already... but where does he get into it? Will the top be removeable or? And for the steering you could do a linkage from the steering wheel to another 'wheel' with two bars protruding from it, and the "control arms" could be attached to the bars... that probably doesn't make any sense. Maybe I'll try drawing later if I'm feeling inspired
-
yeah the top will have a big ass hole in it where he'll be sitting out of it.
and the steering took forever to figure out ( i reinvented the wheel)
but i got it. hopefully it works well.
-
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y166/kenada/family/IMG00247.jpg)
update. started the body in aluminum today. so far so good.
the welding will be the deciding factor in the quality of the job.
-
looks to smalll. by the time its done your kid will have out grown it.
-
yeah thats why i started gettin hot on this thing. he'll be too big pretty soon.
im thinking it should be big enough for him till he's about 3 years old. then it'll just be a shelf car.
-
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y166/kenada/IMG00250.jpg)
top is coming along as well. just did this part tonight.
as soon as i get all the body parts done ill tack them all together and start pounding dents out. lightly of course.
this metal is super pliable.
-
Use a leather sand flled bag and a rubber or plastic mallit. Or make a wodden slapper mallit. It'll work good and won't mar or over work the metal.
-
wooden slapper is a great idea.
-
in for the updates. when i read this a while back, i never expected it to go anywhere past the paper model
-
Bump
maby this will motivate you to get this done before your kid is to old.

In spring I got idea to build a 4 wheel pedal car for my son. To use wheels from old bicycles, to make it as small and light and simple as possible and to make it possible to fit even an adult person.
I was really disapointed surfing internet, as I found almost no free ideas, plans or experiences how to do it. It is no nuclear science, people would invest millions in their know-how, so they would need to hide it!
Now it's autumn now and our car is done. I decided to share my experiences and detailed photos as free plans with other people, interested in self buliding pedal car of that kind.
I wanted my 9 years old son to learn basics of construction and working with metal and wood. He did almost all hand works by himself and he is very proud on it. It is a very good way to move your child from TV and computer games!
