mini me burning lots of oil
« on: May 08, 2010, 02:24:13 AM »

Hi guys, I got a crx that had a b7 bottom and d15b head on it. The cam gear had spun on it and bent about every valve. I did a head rebuild and bought new valves and guide seals. Installed everything got the bitch started up and it just started blowing blue smoke out so i shut it of check a few things started it back up and there wasn't any smoke or so i thought. I then revved the motor up and blue smoke just comes pouring out but when i let it idle it doesn't smoke just as soon as the rpms get above 2000 it smokes really bad. Now all my compression numbers are about 180 across everything is timed up and installed fine. DO u think the valve seal didn't seal or do you think the oil rings are bad on this motor. I'm thinking its the bottom end because when i got the car the motor had like 2 quarts of oil in it and that was all i hate to mess with the head more if that not the problem or maybe i just fucked up on the valve seals. Let me know what you guys think ur always a big help. thanks

If it were the valve seals could it create a similar problem. Cause when i installed them i never felt any click like people describe. But i definitely pushed them on really hard and they seemed to be on there good, But if the seal on the inside didn't seal would oil be able to get down in it when i rev it up and the oil level goes up in the head? I'm just not sure because it was my first head rebuild and also i have no idea of the bottom end condition. Is there a way to do a test on the oil rings by taking the head off and putting oil on the cylinder wall or something to see if its pushing it off??

Heres a shitty video i did my best so you can see the smoke.

After i did this i did a leak down test by using the hose from my compression tester and took the valve out of it and pressurized the cylinder and there was air coming from the oil dipstick hole. Im pretty sure the oil ring is bad just thought i would ask u guys if this is a positive. Thanks a lot

Drop some oil into the spark plug holes and let it sit and then crank it for a while. You should be good.

Yea the oil restrictor is pulled out. Bone why do you think its the guides? How would oil get around them. Maybe ill go and try to drive around and see if it clears up but i doubt that will do shit

maybe because you bent the valves????

Sucking oil past the new seals under high vacuum and then burning it off when you rev it.

Chebys and Furds do it as well.

A valve can barely bend, and the guide is fucked up.  Whatever machinist you took it to is a collosal failure to not know this and refuse to do half a job.

I wouldn't bother repairing them unless you go through the bottom end, too.  Anytime you put a fresh head on a tired bottom end = massive oil burner.

Valve guides are just bronze tubes. Ovaling out their holes or cracking them by cranking a valve sideways isn't hard. A hardcore crack won't be sealed by any valve seal.

I know most tired Hondas smoke liek hell at higher RPM's, but with a smoke cloud at 2k it's probably not the rings. Who knows though, maybe someone rebuilt it with total seal failrings recently.

Nothing wrong with Total Seal rings.  Lots wrong with machining to suit, and break in.
