t56 grinding in 1st/3rd
« on: July 29, 2010, 11:00:21 PM »

Thinking about buying a 1998 vette on saturday seems to be a lot easier and potentially cheaper if the deal works out than the whole ls1 240sx thing.  Went and test drove it today and seems very healthy, though the interior needs some work.  My biggest issue is the car grinds going into first if the car is moving very fast at all and grinds 3rd if you're smashing on it.  Does this mean it's going to need a new tranny, do you think it's just clutch (thought it felt pretty weak for a vette), maybe some adjustment ?  Also the shifter is hella sloppy, like pull it over to first gear and it stays there won't auto return to the middle.  and it's nearly impossible to go from 2nd to 4th cause it's pretty sloppy.

Anyway please be gentle, I have no idea what I'm getting into, but I want to take a giant leap into the world of RWD and v8's.

Definitely synchro's.  Stock T56's aren't too hard to destroy, if you take care of it though it'll be fine.  They arent too hard to rebuild either, but i dont know anything about doing it for the vette, im sure its the same though.  Taking it out is going to be a bitch, prepare to drop the whole rear subframe/end/axles/tires/rear suspension/torque tube.  Oh it is going to be a major bitch, so when you do it, dont cheap out, replace everything you can so you'll never have to do it again, put a new clutch in it and definitely a new slave cylinder, since theyre inside the bellhousing if it goes out it means you gotta do all the forementioned stuff again to replace a >$100 part.  While you're down there you might aswell put in a remote bleeder too, and fuck it, throw some 4.10's in the rear end.  Also replace the rear main seal as those leak quite commonly.  Also do new trans mount n bushing and stuff.  I'd expect to spend no less than 2k for maintenance and something that doesnt make the car a whole lot faster.   You'll love LSx power though.

Yeah sounds like a plan. Hopefully I get it, i can't go down to finish discussing the details until saturday and I was too cheap to put a deposit down on it.  I found a t56 rebuild kit for $275 which includes all syncros bearings and gaskets.  I'll look for a slave cylinder and remote bleeder kit too.  Thanks for the heads up.

brass and shifter forks, see if you can get the upgraded 3-4 piece.

They break about as easy a Honda's
