Installing one of Dave's egr delete kits and a new oil cooler on a 03 6.0 right now.

The dumbest thing is when guys actually remove the egr valve itself, which makes the rad fan run less frequently and the engine run hotter.

explain

IIRC it runs less frequently but also runs around half the speed without it. I can't remember exactly what the deal is anymore because its was years ago when I tested it but it was a substantial difference. Its not a simple "engine reaches X temperature and fan turns on" type of situation. That is the reason I don't put a block off plate for that in my kits.

I'll be the first to say 6.0's have a huge case of CANbus AIDS and do dumb shit that makes no sense, but the PWM fan speed logic in the ECU is based on directly measured coolant, oil, and ambient air temps with a side few modifiers based on whether or not the engine is idling or the vehicle is traveling fast enough to shut the fan off entirely (45mph).

I've been through a couple with no EGR, but EGR was set to not present in the ECU.  I'm not seeing how EGR removal would cause this - was it replicated on multiple trucks, or was it just one truck that might have had a wiring problem?  If I saw one doing that I'd wonder if it was a bad fan clutch or headgasket; deducing the lack of an EGR valve as causing it would be a diagnostic fuck in the ass.

I'm thinking the truck was an 05-06, I only tested the one truck. Most of the mechanics I deal with seem to be familiar with the issue, its just that the details are hazy for me now. I am a hardware guy.

Here is a thread on the issue: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/972688-side-effect-of-disconneting-egr-valve.html

I know the feeling, I'm a software/electronic hardware guy.

I only read the first page, but it seems like the trucks only run shitty after EGR codes are present, and most of those guys are going around without EGR disabled in the ECU.  While the guys at Spartan are very good with PS, I'd like to know if that was before or after they burned their bridge with SCT and whether or not they had the white papers from Ford for the ECU yet.  SCT, as a company, is very funny about who they let have access to certain tables - which sucks as sometimes they are tables required to tune some Ford vehicles correctly.

Well, I guess that gives me something to poke at.  My level of understanding is I disable the presence of the EGR system and the ECU skips past it, it'd suck if that wasn't so and the guy down the road I've been feeding flashes to, for the trucks he puts headgaskets/studs/deletes on, hasn't noticed a problem.

I can't remember what the deal is anymore but the electronics are more gay on the 05-07 then on the 03-04 models, just something else to keep in mind.

The 03-04 you can delete and not even get a cel most of the time.

Very interesting, I've never seen anything about this in all my 6.0l time. It also doesn't make sence to me that the egr would effect the fan in any way. I need to read the whole thread! Good work Dave.
