« on: April 09, 2014, 12:06:06 PM »

So I'm needing to weld my sump pan onto my gas tank on my nova. It's had gas in it b4 so I'm just curious how many of you crazy fuckers have tried this.

Googled it and pretty much got the same response everywhere which is take it to a radiator shop. Fuck that noise...... what have you guys done?

Pump some argon in there. It will push the oxygen out. Can't blow up with no oxygen.

I have also heard you can fill with water just short of the weld. I'd go argon though.

Drain it, let it air vent for a day or 2. Once it looks dry, pump some exhaust fumes into it while you work on it. The carbon will push out all vapors and make sure it wont light.

Been talking to malachite he's gonna tig it for me. (I'm gonna hold the camera while he blowes himself up) Says he's got a good handle on how to do it. He said he's gonna take a torch to it and let it burn itself out first and then fill it with argon while he welds it.

Lol oxyacetylene is fun. We use to fill 30 gal garbage bags up and drape toilet paper across it and light it....lol we did 12 bags piled up on top of each other one year for the 4th of july. The explosion Took the 4"x4" ceramic tiles off the neighbors bathroom walls.

I've welded up a sheet metal gas tank that had a leak.  All I did was pour out all the gas and rinse it out with water real quick.

Hook a hose up to the exhaust pipe of a running car and pump the tank full of carbon monoxide to displace the oxygen so no boom and weld away. And ask Ryan if by some miracle he still has the eg si tranny I gave him years ago.

Nope, not yet. Haven't even pulled the tank. I will probably after summer. At this rate I might not even sump it. If I pick up a used chevy that's got a intank pump I might try and mod that to work.

Steel typically really doesn't soak up much of the contained substance. As such as has been said, a good wash with some dish soap and water is enough to make it safe.

The scary ones are Aluminum and Cast Iron. They are both very porous materials and can hold a lot of the contained substance.

They only blow up when they are empty.  Fill it with water, rinse it out, fill it with water, rinse it out, fill it with water, weld it.

I tried to light one half full once. It would only make a tiny puff of fire then smother itself and go out.

Lol... I had this wagon EF that was beat to fuck and back... had a hatch exhaust on it that cracked the tank...

Busted out the mig one day after filling the tank right up with gas, welded that fucker shut.  It burned a little for like 2 seconds but theres so much "liquid" in there it just sucks the heat out of the weld and it cools right down.  Never leaked again.  No drama.

The tank I'm talking about was aluminum and empty  :?:
still smelled a little like gas too!

If the cap is off I don't think it would build the pressure it needs to explode.  Ever lit a beer bottle partially filled with gas on fire?  No? Try it sometime.

did you know you can boil water in a plastic bottle on a fire and the bottle won't melt
not sure why, but your post reminded me of that for some reason.

Been there, except they try to get you out of the hospital asap in the case of burns because of the open wounds.  I had 2nd deg burns to 30% of my body, basically everything not covered by shorts and t shirt.  This was a couple years ago, i still can't go out in the sun for more than an hour even with spf 50.  I wont be fucking around with gas anymore
