problems installing differential
« on: January 09, 2016, 01:58:45 PM »

I am having trouble getting the diff back in the case. It is not sliding in like it came out. What would cause the bearing to bind when I am putting the diff back in? The bearing is seated on the diff and I mic'ed both bearings and both are cocentric and the same size

the bearing is going to be a tight perfect fit. you need to make sure it goes in completely straight. good luck.

also, metal expands and contracts with heat and cold. so case warm, and bearings cold will be a help...

Going in not perfectly strait or a small burr or dirt/fuzz anything like that. Should go in pretty nice if everything is good.
Starting just a touch off and forcing it can make a burr pretty quick.

Thanks for the input. New bearings solved the problem. Also the differential is an obx version 2 which needed machined  a total of .054 thou equating to .027 thousands on each side so it could be properly shimmed. So far I have put 6000 miles on this diff with no problems as of yet. I am not driving like your grandmother would. About 50 1/4 mile passes also. This is in a 99 hydro b16 transmission. Thanks again
