actually it dosent matter to me what you did, im just writing this to tell you about my weekend..
mine this year, like the last 9 years, was spent in a cornfield in the middle of columbus pa, at an event called the cornfield 500, the ultimate redneck party. check it out at
www.cornfield500.comIve been in every race since it began, and for the last 5 years, dad and I both fielded cars. his car is a 78 monte carlo, and for the last 2 or 3 i had a 85 monte carlo ss. this year dad decided he didnt want to race anymore, so i ran his car, and a friend of mine ran mine.
i built the cages in both cars, they are both 10 point cages, and the cars were built to last years of abuse, compared to alot of people that build them for one years worth of beating. they both have "lincoln lockers" and 5 point belts. dad ran the stock 305 up till last year, and my car has a tired old 350.
last year dads car got a mildly built 350, its a flat top truck motor, with 64CC heads, edelbrock intake, edelbrock intake, 465 lift summit brand cam, and a set of headers. he had traction issues and eventually got hit and popped a right rear taking him out of the running for the $1000 purse.
this year i made some changes. i added a 750 double pumper holley, right front brake shut off, my aluminum D&M seat out of my car, and changed the tires to 26.5 x 8 american racer tires.
this year is the most fun ive ever had racing there. the format is one 10 lap heat race for each class (4 cyl, 6 cyl, and 8 cyl) then a 15 lap feature for each class, which pays the top three positions. and then the last race is a 50 lap enduro, which all classes race and winner takes 1000, 2nd 400, 3rd 300, 4th 200 and 5th 100.
during the heat race i started 4th (outside row 2) and just tried to avoid trouble. i got hit by like 4 cars in the first lap, so i let everyone go and just tried to get a feel for the car. the kid driving my car spun another car and got black flagged. i finished last, but the heat didnt matter, and i stayed out of trouble, those were my goals.
second race starts, i start 3rd, inside row 2, and the first lap i stuck close to the first car, (my other monte carlo) and the outside car got shuffled out. there was a caution after the 2nd lap and i restarted outside front row. the green dropped and i smoked my other car during the drag race down the straight. i continued to lead the entire feature, and proceeded to lap the entire field of 16 cars except the 2nd and 3rd place cars, i lapped half the field twice.. the car was ridiculously fast. the emod tires really hooked hard and the car was by far the fastest car out there. i won the feature and got $200. also, my other car spun about 4-5 laps in and hit a tractor tire, and the next lap broke an axle.
then came the enduro. i started outside front row, but they watered the track, and i got no bite. about 2 laps in i got spun around and lost 2 laps trying to get turned around. there were a bunch of junk getting broken and overheating or whatever and 3 red flags in the first 10 laps, and by that time the track dried up. thats when my car started to shine. i started picking cars off rather quickly, generally about 2-3 a lap, got both laps back and on the last lap caught the leader, i went around him crossing the finish line, but it wasnt quite enough, he had me by about a fender and i ended up placing 2nd, and got the 400.
all in all it was a very fun weekend, i wish i could have won it all but i cant complain. next year ill try fresh tires and maybe do some grooving to get the tires to bite more when it is real wet. the car that won was a non turbo 1g talon. i really hit the set-up of the car, i cant beleive how fast it was, i just hooked super hard, and flew. i was up against some fast cars, there were some purpose built dirt cars but alot of them had too much power and couldnt get it to the ground. there was one that has won a few races at the local big time race tracks in the spectator class, it was a stub front, tube chassis, with over what i heard was 5k in the motor. i think it was just an optimal set-up. next year there are going to be a couple changes but nothing major.
hopefully there will be more cars that i can actually race with rather than pass...
if you look at the pics on the website, monte carlo im talking about it the yellow and blue #3. those were from last year.
i got no pics from the weekend, cause i was racing, and apparently noone in my crew was smart enough to bring a camera (go figure....)
at night they had fireworks and the band black widow played. it was a good time. i also got to see 2 underagers get tackled by the cops, that was also fun to see. one kid scorpioned in the gravel trying to outrun the cops, it was funny as hell, but looked like it hurt.
great weekend for sure, just wish it happened more often. counting down the days till next year!!
