Topic: Cleaning cylinder bores (Read 3915 times)

Long story short here. I have a turbo mazda 626. Afew months ago the rings started to go and it was blowing oil all over the place, I said fuck it, hooked up abottle of nitrous, 150 shot and ran it up and down the street until it let go. Now my dumbfuck ass needs the block to rebuild it. I got ahold of a bore guage and bores are in spec and would probably be ok with a good hone job except one where the is some piston melted to the cylinder wall.

So, what is the best way to remove that shit from the cylinder walls? Im taking it to the machine shop tomorrow anyway, but I REALLY dont want to have to buy new pistons and I have a feeling that they are trying to fuck with me because they said the other block that I took in has .020" wear in the cylinders and would need to be bored at least .030" over.

i used some hard ass plastic to chisle it off and wood too
add crosshatch with brillo pad as necessary and await 220psi of compression

I tried muriatic acid, but that didnt work too well. There are some vertical scratches so I may just let the mach shop do that shit.

Use a utility blade and scrape it off. Hold the blade with vise grips

Yeah it was fast. 18-20psi and the 150 shot. Obiously I ran out of fuel though

Dude, if you have melted piston in the walls, chances are you are gonna need to bore it over, regardless. Keep in mind, if you can catch a scratch with your finger nail, you gotta at least hone.

Machine work really cant be shortcut. It wont last if you half ass it. Honestly, had you just parked it when it started smoking, you probably could have gotten away with just a re-ring/hone. Now your gonna dump more $$$ into the engine than that car is probably worth.

yeah hindsight is 20/20 and its also a bitch. I though the other block that I had was in good shape, but it need .030" over pistons. Im trying to get away with factory pistons. Trust me though, if the shit doesnt look good after its clean and my piston to wall clearances are not in spec, then Im just going to use the other block and fork over the cash for .030" over pistons.

And JD, yes I am a douche for not having alittle foresight. Probably lost it with the foreskin 26 years ago.

Indeed I am much wiser than I was 10 years ago and well on my way to being bald. I hope never to be fat though. I also plan on fucking alot of shit up before still before I die. Right now I wish I wouldnt have blown up the engine withg the nitrous, but goddamn was that fun. Im still on the fence as to whether it was worth it or not.
