Depends how/why the compression is getting past the rings. There are several ways and most can be solved with a good evac system.

Blow-by  = less power.

vacuum pumps + low tension rings = less blow by

this is F1, not cindy's grocery getter.  If the engine lasts for the whole race, they are happy.

Blow-by  = less power.

what do you think the p2w tolerances are?  I'm betting blowby isnt a big issue

my assumption: one less ring = less friction = more power

Also just think of the insane velocity.  There isn't even time for significant blowby.  You could run no rings and i bet it would stilll run without much issue.

actually i think the engines have to last 2 races now

I think all cop cars need to have turbo. nbspnbsp Then they would understand the necessity of putting your foot down and how uncontrollable the urge is to fucking rail on that shit.

No three races, they get 8 engines for 19 races, practices, and qualifying.

Some are using one engine for practices and the rest for qualifying.

The post picts. looks like the older rods and piston configurations. I remember seeing the rods look more intricate and the pistons even lighter before.

Watching the top gear episode where richard hammand(spell) drove the F1 car, they said the engine is almost locked up when cold so they run warm water through it to heat it up, same goes for the oil. I would then say the clearances are tight.

yeah same with some of the high dollar exotics, you can start it cold but it has to idle for like 20 min before you can drive it.

Most people will comment on the piston only having two rings.

on my 450R MXbike i run a cp piston with only one compression ring and oil control rings. it is because if produces less friction, and revs quicker. i noticed a difference between the 3 ring i ran before compared to the new 2 ring.

with the one less ring, i didnt notice any more blowby, but the ring end gap was absolutely crucial, as i was told by the company that did my head work. also the service intervals are alot more frequent than the 3 ringers.
