RHMT Subwoofer repair attempt 1
« on: March 12, 2010, 01:39:01 AM »

So I had some shit in the trunk that I forgot about, and went for a drive over a winding road near my house.  Of course, things shifted around, and hit one of my subs, making a nice hole all the way through the dust cover and the cone.

There was an entire piece missing, which I had to shake out of it:

BTW, all of these are taken with the webcam in my laptop.  Batteries were dead in all my cameras.

I kinda had to pry up the cracked parts to get them to all go back on top of each other so the cracks could line up.

After using a shitload of superglue, and making patches with electrical tape on the inside of the cracks (to hold the glue up in there), I got the piece that broke out that I recovered wedged/half taped into place, and glued that in.  At this point I found out there was another shard missing, so I just said fuck it, and wadded up some electrical tape and glued it in.  If this fails, a new piece will be made out of JB weld.  O0

I figure, worst case, the thing is slightly messed up, but not leaking anymore, and I can use it until I buy another one to replace it for $50.  I just got sick of hearing the thing bottoming out even at lower volumes.  I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

These can't hurt either.

another good repair is

cover back of cone with duct tap
coat outside with just enough JB weld to cover
firmly press another piece of duct tape over the JB

If I had the cash to just replace these now, I would.  But this seems to work.  The tape/JB weld/tape was plan B, if this didn't work.  These subs also aren't bad at all for only costing $45 a pop.  I think I might have to add some epoxy to the repair, to make it just a little more solid with the rest of the cone.  But it doesnt leak anymore. They'd sound a whole lot better if I gave them all the power they wanted.  I'll eventually downsize to a single 10 or 12 running 4 or 500rms.  Its not a bad first system though.  Factory bose system from a nissan maxima, nigged to interface with my pioneer deck (including relays to turn on individual amplifiers, DIY RCA connections, etc), a profile mono amp for the subs, and the two kenwoods.

seems to be holding up pretty well so far, and I've cranked it as loud as I ever have with some Pendulum.  And I still have my JB Weld for other things, which is pretty nice.
