Did you know you can make your own roller/ball bearing turbo form a journal bearing with a drill press and an ability to find roller bearings by deminsions using a bearing buyer's guide.

And if done right for less than $20, I had an old turbo rebuilder explain it to me about 15 yrs. ago. It did not seem too difficult.

Never gave it any thought to be honest, although it seems almost obvious.  You'd basically need the bearing width, the inside diameter for the shaft, and the outer diameter (of where the journal bearing sat before).  Then look up a set of ball bearings that take an external oil supply that are within those dimensions.  Awesome.

Or just get a sealed bearing similar to what is used alternators but take the seals off and the oil will flow around and throught the bearing. ;)

Would the bearing have to be pressed onto the shaft? The shaft spinning inside the bearing race would kind of defeat the purpose wouldn't it?

Not always you could have a 0.001" to 0.003" tolerance to acount for for operating temps. ;D

I looked into it and started to change a 14b to ball bearing. The issue was finding the correct dimensions locally and also ensuring that the bearing could spin like 100k rpm and not splode. IIRC garett bearings have some sort of side load design into them that most bearings don't. I forget the technical term.
