yeah my local electrical supply house has it for around $.50 per 4 foot piece in every size I could want.  If you're going to be doing a lot of it a cheap heat gun or a hair dryer makes it easier to put on then eventually burning yourself with a lighter.  Plus if you hold the lighter too long on one spot that stuff is easily scourched instead of it shrinking properly.

Anybody played with the new-ish 3M butt connectors?  The material they are made of IS a gel-like heatshrink.  Pretty cool stuff.  Crimp it and heat it.  Your done.

I had some that were combined type of deal that you crimped then heated and it shrunk and some clear goo even oozed out just a touch to seal it all up after it cooled and hardened.  I'll have to see who made em or where I got em

Thats exactly what Im speaking of.  I like em.  Good for quick repairs, and seal out moisture.  I wouldnt make a harness with them or anything, but nice for what they are.

Only retards like hotrex use fire starting but connectors.
Buy a soldering gun or iron from HF for 10 bucks and do it the right way.

solder+heat shrink=non fire starting/good connection.

I dont think you know what im talking about.  They are made of a gel that couldnt possibly cause a short/fire unless you held a torch to it for like 5 min.  3M thinks there good enough to risk your life/law suit to repair airbag harnesses. I think radio, turbo timer, etc isnt out of the question.

Im not saying that these are superior to soldering, because they arent.  Im saying for a quick repair that you dont have to worry about future issues with, they are the ticket.

Soldering is okay if you know how to do it right. I like using a good quality crimp connector, a good crimper and heatshrink.

They make solder splices too, its heatshrink tubing, with little rings of solder already inside, when you heat it with the heatgun the solder melts and impregnates the wires, soldering them together and heatshrinking it at the same time. I know AMP makes them, probably 3m too.
