honda d16z6 cranks
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:51:50 PM »

Alright, where yall nogs gettin your d16z6 cranks?

I tried a junkyard one, but I think the center main is out of round and has been slowly eating away my bearing.  Saw Rockauto had 3 companies reman pieces for around $220, but when I called it turned out they couldn't get any for z6, only y8!

y8 will fit, but it has a different configuration for oiling holes, which is allegedly inferior.

Buy a POS EX/Si, part out the interior and some electronics, scavenge the crank. OR swap a d15 into it and sell it.

gotta be kidding me.  so Majestic won't even sell them?

How reliable are the y8 cranks w/ boost, and should I use one?

I have a scored up z6 crank sitting around.  Anyone got a shop they use to get them remanufactured?

i wouldnt use any crank that wasnt anything but OEM.

they made MILLIONS of Civic's 96-00 with that crank. im sure it will be fine with even a lot of boost.

honda/acura have removed tons of older part #'s from their system. Hell brackets/mounts/etc you need for many swaps are no longer sold

Wanna start off with a clean d16 buy a low mileage jdm motor

Where are you located? I have a few cranks laying around that need clean up. If your close to NJ, come pick one up for some gas money.

Get the y8 crank and drill the single hole that's there through the other side, chamfer the hole and it's the same thing.

I dont agree with the cross drilling i think its horse shit personally many and I mean MANY engines dont have a cross drilled crank and support tons of power the key is the get a straight block to put it in and make sure your journals are in good shape IE round and not tapered one end to the other. From my experience on the engine dyno even v8 engines using dry sump setups usually dont ever frol 7 gal a min which is what a y8 pump flows actually i believe its 6.8 but regardless you have almost no oil galleys compared to a a v8 with cross overs, lifter, main galleys etc. just food for thought.

For some reason vtec uses a high volume of oil. I haven't bothered to look at why, but it does. The y8 stuff is inferior and the best fix is to copy the z6.

Also, there is a difference in v8 and 4 cylinder you seem to be over looking. It takes a lot more cylinder pressure for a 4 cylinder to make 400hp than a v8. So, the 4 cylinder rods are seeing a lot more force at the crank than the v8 at the same power level. It's been a very long time since I have a v8 apart, but if I remember right the bearings are quite a bit larger needing less pressure to avoid contact between the crank and bearings than the 4 cylinder as well.

All good points. Does a cross drilled crank help sure is it ABSOLUTELY needed no. Didn't think about the Breckenridge but I suppose that indeed under vtec the engine does hemorrhage a lot of oil out of the rocker arms. I am not talking 400hp v8s I am talking 1000+HP. They too lose a lot of oil from internal leaks but we try our best to avoid it.I agree with bearing loading being much rougher on a 4 cylinder ESP at tdc/because as all parts stop and change direction but I just built 2 Hyundai theata motors (Mitsubishi 4b11). That I set clearances on mains from 9 tenths to 1.1 thou so pretty tight rods were slightly looser but you get the idea.

Just run .003-.004 on the rods and nitro 70wt oil lol.

That reminds me, I should order 4 more gallons of Lucas 15w-40 CJ-4 oil at work. I've been wanting to use this in my turbo d16, but I still need a new front end.
