Topic: Removing fluting from glass headlights? (Read 7253 times)

So I was pulled over for headlight being out today and instead of buying new bulbs I'd like to go ahead and do a proper HID retrofit.

What can I use to remove the fluting from the glass lenses? I'd rather not use ghetto plastic ebay headlights or the plastic clear lenses since they like to turn yellow. Would rather remove some of the fluting where the projector would be and keep the glass.

Any ideas?

dude trust me its not worth the effort, i spend about 30 min sanding with a power sander and i didnt even make a dent in the fluted. i tried very high grit metal sandpaper >15k and some like 200 grit and it doesnt make any difference.

i am making my own lenses out of lexane using a plaster mold and a female ring
here is one that is almost 100%. the plastic is specifically meant to not yellow in the sun, check the label.

Damn, I was hoping there was some sort of rotary tool I could use to grind the shit off. I just need a circle. Lexan looks like a pain in the ass too.

just retro the projectors anyways. you'll still get a nice cutoff and the stray light is pretty minimal.... usually.

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't hurt to see how bad it'll fuck it up first. If it's too bad I'll go another route, just don't want to blind motherfuckers because I know it pisses me off

no i made a fram out of wood, screw the plastic to the frame, heat it up in oven, pull it out and put it over the mold, push down with the female cutout.

yeah i built a vacume box but it was total fail, pressing/stretching the lenses is way easier

Hit the lenses with 1000K or 2000k then clear them and drop the 40 bucks on the silver star Silvana. Done, i see everything and dont blind anyone.

if they are blinding you they are not projectors, all they did was install a rebased hid bulb

You have the wrong person, sir.

If I'm going to go through the trouble of doing something, I'll do it right.

IE - actual quality projectors, bulbs, and ballasts. The ricers you're bitching about are the ones that didn't do it correctly.

I have Silverstars, they help, but they still aren't that great, not to mention they're expensive for a bulb and mine just burned out after a little over a year of use. I live out where there's a lot of animals/backroads, and extra lighting would be fucking nice. OEM projectors/ballasts have gotten a bit cheaper and I think they're in a "reasonable" price range.

Half the time Projectors in Stock housings looks really good.

Never had silverstars, but rocked Cuzo bulbs in my EF and they worked pretty damn good

Im rocking Silverstars right now and they are awesome. The bulbs that is.

Funny thing my damn plastic headlights are ok but my Stock fogs are glass and they are almost brighter than my headlights.

Silverstars are great, but their lifespan is rated at 1/10th of the regular bulb, no joke. However they're not expensive if you buy at the right place, mine were $15 per pair at amazon w/free shipping.

I'd just recommend FX35's into regular housings if you can, or any hi/low combo, if you have the space. Right now I have an air filter & boost solenoid where the projector would stick out of the housing. $:-\$
