Millwrights, pipe fitters have a question.
« on: July 07, 2009, 10:41:24 PM »

Okay, so I applied online for Fluor, said they had an opening here in PA in Beaver county, was hoping one of the power plants, nuke or coal fired. I applied for maintenance, They want me to take a test, some NCCER test. I'm not a pipe fitter, I think I read somewhere the test is for pipe fitters? I'm not going down to Pittsburgh to take the test if I'm going in with no clue about it. I'm an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic, my specialty is in Pumps and valves. Finding a job sucks my dick, btw.

Working for Fluor? i hope you like dealing with plenty of bullshit, one of the rattiest fucking companies ever...

Maintenance position? you dont have to be union to even apply? gov projects like that are supposed to be organized labor, i guess they could just organize you in. is this an entry level position?

NCCER test can vary widely based on what they are actually having you do

It didnt say anything about being an apprentice or journeymen. I assume it must be entry level because it didnt mention the union at all, so far its all online and i havent even got to talk to anyone yet, they want you to take the test before anything pretty much. I was just wondering if it was even worth my time to drive down to pittsburgh to take the test.

I'm goin to school to be a machinst in south side pittsburgh at some place called new century

careers. its not just cnc bull either its learnin all the old school shit from guys that have been in

the field for 30+ years. its a 6 month course, free tuition, and they find you a job cuz they're

sponsered by a bunch of companies in the pittsburgh area and after u graduate if u get laid off

from a job u just call them up and they get you another job.  i like it so far its mostly hands on

training and they give u good info.

Oh yeah? I worked in a full scale machine shop, all old school lathes and milling machines. I never ran any of them though, we always tore the pumps apart, had our welder weld them up and then they machined them back to spec, then we would re-assemble.

Look's like the state may pay for me to go to Keystone Diesel, they train class A cdl drivers, from there hopefully I can find something entry level diesel engine repair, since I live on my own I cant afford to go to school to be a diesel mechanic, it takes too long and my unemployment would run out.
