Topic: Painted my car, now how to get rid of orange peel / after paint what to do (Read 6240 times)

Painted the car in the driveway. Now what am I supposed to do after the clear coat to finish it off? Sanding? what grit? Buffing? what buffer, pads and polish? Its a base coat clear coat using Sherman williams paint.

Look up the writeup on how to paint with Rustoleum paint. They go into pretty good detail on how to minimize orange peel.

defanitley time to wet sand. is that all in the clear or in the base coat also? if the base was liek that before you shot the clear then you might need to do alot more then wet sand.

That looks like a Reducer issue. But nonetheless, wetsand with 1000 grit using a sanding block, and then compound it with a lambswool pad or a foam pad. After that, you will need polish with a foam pad. Then wax is the final step.

Leed's brother ryno lined the bay of his nissan and it looked great. We got bored in auto shop in High School and just panted a friends truck with some house paint and a roller...... Man was he pissed at the end of the day when he saw what we did to his truck. It ok though we panted it white, and you couldent see any of the door dings his truck had after that. He was gona turn it into a offroad beast anyway.

It hard to tell by the pics but it dosnet look like u got enouf clear on it. Thats pretty bad, start by wet sanding it with 1000 grit and see how it looks. ur not going to get all that out but u might make it look somewhat better

This reminds me of the Mythbusters episode (no I dont usually watch that fucking show) where the golfball exterior gained them a supposed 11% efficiency in fuel mileage. Anybody else see that shit?

If its true, I wonder if there are any benefits to having such a surface inside an intake manifold?

Jesus christ.

It's "clear" to see (big pun?) that the clear didn't atomize out of the gun correctly. I think you'd be good to machine sand with a light grit to get the surface more flat, hopefully without getting into the color coat. Play with the gun settings, and spray clear again.

Its an Oldsmobile with 280,000 miles. It paid for itself 10 times over by now. But its really just a learning experience that this point. Even though its fine for what it is , I'd like to try and make it better for when I paint things in the future...

I go to my local Auto Paint Supply and pick their brain. Find a good store and show them your gun, paint and reducer.
Temp and humidity are important factors in the final product, so, when choosing a reducer, tell them what climate you are spraying it in.

Find a piece of scrap to test the gun settings on before you spray again.

I was thinking about waiting till spring to paint the rex myself, but scared of this same shit happening. How much did it cost you to paint it? The fact of saving almost a grand seems appealing to me. At least I'll have a bumper and hood to practice on $:-\$

other than stripping the car, only way to get it decent.

New cars come with some orange chicken peel, moms Buick is getting a new hood thanks to Bambi and it is a PITA to TRY to match the OEM orange peel!

some serous orange peel could be a mixture of things.... reducer, gun pressure, gun, elapsed flash time, and such.... but fuck for what it is the color matches looks great

I wouldnt put the time into cutting and buffing just my personal opinion because when u get half way through and pissed and quit it looks even worse cause its half done...... just get it a little dirty she will look like new :yes:

here is a website that has some cheap paint prices and can get it in any OEM color. a friend looked up laguna seca blue from the bmw and for the whole kit with everything he needed to paint his car it was gonna be like $330

I don't know about intake manifolds, but I am starting to see it on valves.
