basic eg mini-me turbo build (boned)

So I had some free time today and decided to start on the turbo kit. My car is a 95 EG hatch. I am tring to turbo it for as little as possible, as I only have a shitty job mounting tires at Discount Tires. So here is what I'm working with:

Turbo is a small IHI from a first gen Probe GT with stock down pipe.

HF manifold with home-made flange welded on.

Stock intercooler from a Mustang SVO

SAFCII

Manual Boost Controler

Blow Off Valve

Oilpan was already tapped on this motor. It just had a cap on it. I still need the charge pipes. I got the oil feed line setup from my brother, and he let me use his camers, so here are some pics.

Downpipe mounted. Almost looks stock, but the J-bend comes down a little to far.


Might get it trimmed a little for ground clearance when I go get the exhaust done.


Basicly done. Took the stick headers off at this point.



I put all the gaskets in place and bolted together and put the oil lines on. I had the oil system sealed, so I wanted to hear what it sounded like. I don't have injectos yet, but since it isn't plumbed into the intake yet, I fired it up.

It is a LOT quiter than I expected for being open down pipe. The turbo sound nasty spooling so freely. I was reving it up to 6000rpms in the driveway and it sounded like a jet engine. Plus it was pushing a ton of air. It was almost like a wind tunnel or something. So for the next day or two, I am going to have boost blowing at my hood LOL.

It just wasn't bolted on tight. My brother said that the wastegate or somethig was making contact with the block, so he just tapped it with a hammer a few time to make it clear.

looks good, that stock downpipe elbow would work if you mounted the turbo the other way.

I have been driving my car today with the boost blasting at the hood, and getting attention from other cars on the road :)

Wile at work, I popped my hood to show my boss what I have been up to. I was reving it up like I did yesterday, and it sounded so bad ass. But I noitced a small amount of smoke. I didn't think much of it untill about 15 mins ago, going on a Taco Bell run. Car has been stiiting since 4ish, and its in the 30's outside. For about 2 mins wile I let it warm up, It was smoking. What I would consider a lot. But after I started driving, it stopped, and didn't smoke wile I let it idle in my drive way.

Should I be worried? I mean, I can't have blown the motor. I am thinking it has to do with being open downpipe with no cat.

good job killing the turbo. Also IHI VJ11 is not worth it's wait in scrap, throw it as far away as possible.

Uh, yeah. Its not plumbed to any thing, so I doubt that I did any damage. It can't even make boost just blowing to open air. And you can't get compressor surge if there is not throttle to snap shut.

Fired it up this morning and it smoked a lot again, but it only lasted about 30 to 40 seconds. It didn't smoke really in the garage wile I was looking for smoke.

Just need a few more couplers and it will be done. Since you guys are saying that the turbo might be dust, I think I am just going to boost it with what I have. Gonna wire up the SAFC and my brother is just going to add in like 50% or 60% of fuel in boost. Would that bee enough with the stock injectors?

I will see if I can get a video camera and do a ripper video. Should be done by monday.


your turbo seals and or bearings are fucked check your shaft play.

It dosen't move up and down much at all, if any. It does mov in and out though. Just enpugh that you can feel it kind of clanking around.

How much play is within spec?


So what size is your oil feed line, and your oil return line?

Oil feed is a left over ebay -4 setup. Oil return in a 3/4 heater hose.

If there is any play in the turbo, it's blown. Again, IHI VJ11 have been known to blow by giving them odd looks and sneezing. Step away from the IHI and get a T3 or a 14b.

That said I definately want to see ripper vids of blown turbo+maxed out stock injectors for more LOL

WOW! This thing is a beat. Well, compaired to what it was before it is. Even tunig with the stock injectors, it seems to be pretty good. I still never got a boost gauge, but I think most stock turbo cars run less then 10psi. As soon as I find a video camera, I will get a ripper/ burnout vid up.

Failure 101:

1st) Overspin your turbo by not connecting it's outlet to the throttle body

2nd) Don't know/don't care how much boost it's running

3rd) Welding a 38mm flange while keeping the hole below at 18mm

4th) Assume stock injectors can give more than 175hp

5th) Make some ripper vids before you get it tuned halfway decent OR add an oil restrictor on the turbo feed

6th) Call AAA and cancel your subscription a day before to save money for a WG

FYI when the time comes, you can simply edit your thread's title to add "NOW WITH DESTRUCTION PICS". It will fit, don't worry.



The only thing worse than your headlong plung into this w/o any practical knowledge is that you refuse to listen to people who've "been there, done that" for real. We're not the peanut gallery on other websites saying "your manifold will crack unless it's Full-Race", nor are we people that hack shit together an blow it in a day. The people here take nothing and make something, mostly by DOING IT RIGHT.

FUCK!

We went out on monday night to make a ripper. I decided to  hook up the manual boost controler and up the boost. My brother tuned in some more fuel, and we put a vise grip on the fuel return line to up the fuel pressure.

 I did a nasty burn out, and a few launches. Up until then, it was running very strong, so we went out to I95 for some highway runs. As requested, I did a 3rd and 4th gear pull. This is when shit went down hill. I am not 100% on what fucked up, but something did. Smoke pourd out a million time worse than it already did, and I instantly lost power. Had to pull over and check it out. But it was dark and we couldn't see shit, so I had to baby it home, wich took forever at 20mph.

Today, we did a compression check, and it wasn't good. 150, 145, 90, 45. Had no choice but to tear it apart, hopping it was the headgasket. Wrong. 3 and 4 are toast. What realy sucks, it during the tear down, I find that this motor I bought was not just a head swap, but had new pistons.

I was so pissed, But I have a buddy with an a1 and ima snatch it up and do an OCZC rod/vitara dual cam.

Dude you tuned boost with an afac and used stock injectors without a boost gauge or decent wideband. Pls say your not surprised.  :-X

I wonder why my 300000km b18a still holding 10psi (with my turbo it's I've seen same setup at 300hp) and daily abuse since half the last summer and yours failed in a week.

seriously this has to be a troll account, no one is this fucking stupid.

afc's are horrible, i had one for a month (in 06") and it was the worste thing ever. Never would i think of running unknown boost levels with one.
