I am curious if the Auto makers are still going through the 36/42 volt systems on vehicles instead of the 12/14 volt system we have now.

I remember reading that by 2010 there will be at least 30% of all new vehicles will have this system.

Maybe OBD3 is the CAN diagnostic system that is required on vehicles made from 2005 on up.

Who cares about obd3?  Onstar can stop your ass in the middle of the road if they want.

They talk about OBD3 and variants of it here at GM a lot.  

The talk is of a OBD3.1 and .2 .   I sat through a 2 hr presentation of "OBD3...the future"  about 2 weeks ago... no plans yet , but it will basically use systems like Onstar to monitor the car / your fuel purchases ..ect..ect.  It was also mentioned that one of the benefits of the system is that any attempt to modify it would instanly be transfered via GPS to the OEM so that they can kill your warranty.. Even things as miniscule as putting the wrong gas in would send a message. It's a facet that helps to improve OEM's loss ratio's when it comes to warranty business.

CAN is supposed to be in all 05+ vehicles.

There's no reason to go to OBD3 yet as they still haven't gotten everybody to completely adhere to OBD2.  It's not the clusterfuck it was, but still too early.

OBD is developed by C.A.R.B. in conjunction with SAE and ISO. It is out of GM's and any other manufacturers hands. They will just have to adhere to it if the EPA mandates it, if they want to sell their shit state side. The manufacturers are hardly even a voting member in such matters as emissions standards.

im not sure about mass transit though, there are still a too many podunk towns outside of a feasible area to do that. i dont disagree it will happen, but not for quite a while im sure

you are in fact leasing it from your state. if you don't believe it, try not registering it, try not getting a title for it, try not licensing it. in a lot of places if you have a car in your driveway w/o plates they will just tow it away.

i agree with you to a point, but thats taking it a little farther than i meant. i think the day will come where you can only lease cars. you will never pay it off. you just keep trading it in every few years and keep making payments. it will be more like a vehicle service.

also, i have had a 91 std hatch in my driveway for quite a while now with no title or tags on it, but thats just poking a stick in the fire. im sure if the right person saw it, it would be towed

I read an article that outlined the idea of OBD3 as being almost identical to OBD2 monitoring with the added feature of having a transponder that relays readiness and data-logged info wirelessly thus allowing the driver to bypass the hassle   of going through emissions if their car is operating properly. I don't know how many of you have gone through emissions in Arizona, but if OBD3 can save me the ass tearing agony of waiting in line for an hour and a half in 115 degree weather, I might not be totally opposed to it.
