NW nogs, need info
« on: January 23, 2010, 10:32:26 PM »

Anyone know of a machine shop that can hone FRM sleeves?

I've already talked to Spiker and Justin, they say Action is out of the question. I tried calling Auburn Auto Machine and DG Machine but they're both close so I'll try on Monday again.

Need a shop that is used to dealing with Porsche and other EuroFag motors.

Any engine machine shop should be able to do this, any shop that says this is specialty, stay away from.

I believe you missed the point Dave. Honing FRM is a bit different, and NOT any machine shop Id trust.

Yep, different stones and process required for FRM sleeves.

No not really, its pretty close to honing Al cylinders, I would just follow the manufacturers instructions. I've done it, use fine stones, on the higher end of pressure, and low rpm, iirc like 40rpm.

Just got off the phone with Robert from GE. He says that you HAVE to go OS even with just a hone. After a simple hone, too much material be taken off and the p2w would be way too excessive for stock bore pistons. He says this applies to ALL Honda blocks...Then he went on a mini parade saying how every machine shop does it wrong and that theyve been doing it for 20 years...

I've had my block honed before and put stock bore pistons with no issues. Ran for about 20k miles until ringlands decided to give out. I know plenty of others that have done the same.

What say you nogs? Auburn Auto Machine is quoting me $280 for hone, line check on mains and block cleaning. Robert was charging me $180 for just the hone, but says I need OS pistons.

uhhhhh you don't need oversized pistons for a simple hone, sure you could hone the shit out of it for 10 hours straight and fuck it up.

if you just want to scratch up the surface and maybe get some fine grooves out, just hone it yourself and slap some pistons in it

i've done it so many times cant' even count. at least 3 times on the same bore too with std pistons

Id STILL gravitate towards the info I gave you bean boy, If you have any serious questions you want answered as to why, I suggest getting in touch with someone from say Mahle, or a REPUTABLE machinist.

Hs like to smoke due to the frm sleeves... Fuck up the hine and youll have a really really gay smokey bitch

I know about the FRM issues and I know a little as to why. That is not my question. I KNOW I have to look for a shop that does these, I just don't know WHICH shop does. That is the issue. I've known from the start that FRM is a different process than ductile iron. The issue is finding those fucking shops.

I've honed ductile iron sleeves before without issues as well still using std pistons. I think robert is full of shit. That, or he is a super perfectionist that wants the cylinders 110% round and sees 99.358% as being very out of round so he has to remove more material which causes you to need a larger piston.

I'm a little iffy on going with Auburn Auto. They say they do have the different stones to do it, we'll see. I'll keep doing my research.

And this isn't for me. It's for a customer. Stock H22 block/head stroked with f22 crank/rods. THe motor is ready to put back together, asides from needing to first size up the bearings and the hone.

I know you live in Lynwood nigger. I'll be spending the night in NorthGate anyways so it's no big deal.

I'd imagine somewhere around $350 for a bore/hone. I know DG charges nearly $400 for a bore/hone.

Spiker, I've honed FRM before, I was just saying its similar to Al. It is not difficult. The stones are nothing special, just run 600, any shop that has honed Al should have these. The only reason a shop wouldn't be able to do this is if their hone doesn't turn slow enough, alot of hones only go down to 100ish rpm. The hone pressure shouldn't be any issue for a good quality hone.

You cqan do cheqaper.... I believe DG is cheaper, but My buddy Mike Dope went toHS with Mike (who inherited AAM from his old man)... They are a very reputable and rerliable shop. Not the cheapest, but one of the best in the area.

After I broke my oil pump on the overrev I had them check the block, rods, bores and shit. They did the block hone for me that Ive gopt goin on now as DG was slammed. I payed a bit more, but am really happy. They do all Mitches work too... So... Everyone of us in our little NW boat anchor crew making over 600 is on their machine work.

Its nowhere near 350. not even close. TELEPHONE... USE IT 253 735 5267

If thats the case, DG is more expensive. That's what they charged Alex(the guy in Northgate that bought your exhaust). $400ish for bore, hone, main align check, decking and cleaning. Their service was pretty good and was impressed.

They're charging me $280 for the hone, main align check and cleaning. I can't imagine boring is less than another $100.

$400 for a quality bore, hone, facing the deck, main journal alignment check and hot tanking on a 4cyl is a real good deal.
