Im still a little lost why in the world did we get away from cables? Drive by wire seems like just a headache and money killer for auto makers.

how much you wanna bet the 'pedal replacement' is actually replacing the pedal position sensor that fails wide open?

Quote
To fix the problem, Toyota and the government said dealers will shorten the length of the accelerator pedal on the recalled vehicles and in some cases remove foam from beneath the carpeting near the pedal to increase the space between the pedal and the floor. They said owners of the ES350, Camry and Avalon would be the first to receive notification because the vehicles are believed to have the highest risk for pedal entrapment.

Toyota also plans to install a brake override system on the Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES350, IS350 and IS250 models, Toyota and NHTSA said. The brake override system will ensure the vehicle will stop if the brake and the accelerator pedals are applied at the same time.

Yeap. I'll just add that you would think the software people that designed this would have it setup so that if you push the gas and brake, it just brakes.

I think Mythbusters did something where they braked with throttle wide open on a variety of cars and were always able to stop...the one that took the longest was the Roush Mustang...  It's really as simple as holding the brake if your car throttle is stuck.

Either way, it would have been ridiculously simple to code the ECU so it will let off the throttle if the brake is depressed.  Some of the manufacturers' cars already do this.

Did they do it from a highway speed roll of 70+ mph?

You can make a car incredibly safe it you take the most unsafe part of the equation out.  The driver.

I have yet to drive anything with DBW that didn't feel like it had an incredible amount of lag time. and/or didn't exhibit some odd properties.

I will stick to cables for my throttle control, and linkages for my transmission control.

What about idle control. Imo Drive by wire is great, it can also smooth out an eratic driver for increased fuel economy. There is also lots of aftermarket ECU support.

I tried this in my girlfriend's highlander to see what happens.  I put my foot to the floor at 60, and at 80 I hit the brake.  The car slowed down.  It slows down even faster if you push the selector into neutral.  In the process I may have broken the stability and traction control (a good thing), or its just a toyota pile of fail and it just gives up.  It also decided to pull the fuel trims back to -100.6% on 2 cylinders, throw lean burn codes, and misfire a lot.  I gotta get around to doing a tuneup on that thing, because I am damn sure the stealership didn't do anything of the sort.  Its way to fucked up for a 2003 that was dealer maintained.

TL;DR

Toyota has gone to shit

Also, see quote in sig.

The 06+ S2000's have good DBW with no lag. You also don't have the stupid air pump and all its other gear. I do like the simplicity of my cable throttle though.

If you guy's were in the market for a new car, what would you be looking at?

Is there anything currently in production that isn't an overcomplicated pile of feces?
