Looking at "new" cars, opinions needed
« on: February 23, 2010, 02:48:00 PM »

So I sold the CRX last night as I got tired of finding more and more crap wrong with it. So now I'm on the prowl for a good deal. Not looking to jump into the first thing I find so hopefully I can find something decent. Other than my failure of an Eclipse the only other cars I have experience with are Honduhs. Seeing as I have had every model from a 90-99 I'm looking outside that box to go for something different.

Anyway, like I said I haven't had any personal experience from some of the cars I'm looking at, so any personal input would be great.

99+ Mustang (preferably GT) - Concerned that they have 150k+ mileage, and not sure on reliability. I know all the past Fords my parents had ate through tranny's and shit the bed by the 150k mark. I have only found a couple of these as it seems like most are v6 auto tragic failures

98+ Camaro (preferably Z28) - Again same concerns as above.

VW GTI - 2003 model I found that looks great, but I have always heard VDubs have a bunch of weird issues. I heard the same thing about Eclipses and found out real quick it was true.

Mk2 MR2 - Seem pretty decent and I know they will run a good while kept up. Most have high miles and a hefty price. Other than the obvious T top leaks and bleeding of the coolant are there any other issues?

Out of the shit you have listed, the Musturd and Camaro would be the most trouble free.  Your 'reliability concerns' are pretty much unfounded.

The VW pile of shit will be more of a headache than either of those two could ever aspire to be.

Build quality is a different story though.

What do I know though, I drive cheap ass Civics that are built like trash.

Yeah problem is finding one. I think everyone of the ones I seen were V6, and of those 90% were auto. Same with the Mustangs. Found plenty of pre 98 Camaro Z28 and pre 99 Mustang GT's, but don't like those body styles.

00+ z28, dont get a 98

What's wrong with the 98's?

Sounds balla, can I pay you in Nacho Hot Pockets?

Here's the GTI I was talking about. Guy said he has had it since 38K miles. Tranny was replaced at 114k, said that it just locked up randomly one day. So replaced tranny and ACT clutch.

Dont buy modded VW's.  Thats a long walk off a short pier.

Of your options, I put them in this order for reliability/ease of working on.

Eclipse<VW<Camaro<Mustang

Personally my choice would be the mustang.  Easiest to work on, and probably cheapest to own and modify in the long run. Parts can be had for dirt money usually. Ive owned 2 mustangs 5.0 and 4.6 and loved both of them.  Keep the mustang stock and get better gas mileage than either of the others too.  My 98 GT got 27mpg highway when it had the stock ring/pinion.

Yeah would be nice, but not looking to drop that kind of money on a daily driver. Not to mention when I was in one last I was sitting straight up in the seat with it all the way back and my knees were up against the dash which wasn't too comfortable. Also I would want a AP2 which is still a bit higher.

Toss in a coke dollar store shasta and we got a deal.
dollar tree carries coke products.

out of all the cars you listed i'd probably end up with the mustang. only cause i wouldn't buy a camaro that didn't have the ls1 in it. they are not easy to find (cheap).
vw costs money to fix, they are not cheap.

I'm having just as hard time finding GT Mustangs. The only one I found that looked decent was a 2000 black with black leather interior, auto (ehhh), and 160k miles. Again the miles is what kills me. I just don't trust a domestic for high mileage.
