Fixing toyota valve bucket fail
« on: March 17, 2010, 06:20:12 PM »

4ages have a habit of spitting shims when u rev th shit out of them.  as you can see they are a shim over bucket design. So while sitting round bored i figured i can fix it till i break it.

My plan is to drill the bucket in teh centre, then weld the shim to it. Issues: Warping, cracking ect. What you think fuckers?

Welding the shims to the bucket?

I foresee fucked camshafts in your future.

Sounds like there is a much better solution out there already.

I blame Yamaha for that idea they did this two the 2M heads for 2000gt and Toyota follow the example and now most of Toyota's twincams have this crap.

But this is only a major problem if your over rev-ing the engine and you have excessive wear already present on the shim.

I'd say invest in some shimless bucket kit and be done. ;D

Most of Toyota's twin cams were designed by Yamaha.

Yeah the "G" heads and my favorite the 4age 20v love the head design. I would love to see a honda head like that for my d16 w/ v-tec of course.  ;D

You can use 1nfze buckets from the japanese yaris. I'm not sure of the MRS buckets will fit, and those fuckers are expensive.  I thought of this idea cause im cheeaaap assss.  Id sooner just goto a 20v head and say fuck it. Id sooner buy an is300 and say fuck that too.

MRS buckets are a tad too wide, they only fit the S-series and JZ heads.

As mentinoned above, newer buckets are a bit wide. Pre-93 buckets all interchange, all post-93 buckets interchange. Although I've seen that certain models used the newer buckets starting in 91 like a 3s-gte. There's one v6 that uses even wider buckets.

It'd have been much smarter to have a valve-spacer-shim-bucket design. That way the shim is loaded on almost it's entire surface, rather than just by the cam lob spot or valve stem spot. It would also lend itself to more ductile shims since more surface area = less pressure per sq inch of shim (less squish).

I vote bigger cam and having each bucket precision-ground to your needs. 2 counts of win in one "bucket". ;)

By bigger cam, I cam going to ASSume that you meant to say larger base circle.

 :P

And in that light, it would totally negate the cheap aspect it it would probably require a core to be hardwelded at the minimum, or a new custom core.

Non-hydraulic buckets are a pain in the ass and hydraulic buckets suck.

time for a rotary valve head?

do it RHMT style- order a bunch of ball valves from mcmaster and fill the head with JB weld to make new pockets for the ball valves.
