Ninja 650R - Decent bike?
« on: April 13, 2010, 10:49:46 PM »

Saw a 2007 Kawasaki Ninja 650R for sale for $3500 with 8,370 miles.  For shits and giggles, I asked the guy if he'd take payments since I don't have $3500 to throw down.  He happens to work for a bank in the financing department so said he could get it financed for me...

Now at first glance, and due to my limited motorcycle knowledge, I thought this would be a pretty damn quick bike similar to a CBR or R6, but read it's basically a budget beginner bike.

Any known problems with these?  Worth the price or should I just wait?

Mostly I'm looking for something cheap and not old/too slow.  Seems to fit the bill.

they are good bike. I know a few people that have them and havent had any issues. The standard riding position make them good bikes for longer trips

for a starter bike they are great.  just don't expect it to be like any current 600 super sport and you should have a ton of fun with it.

Haha, I don't have a vehicle to get to work, much less NJ :P

I doubt I have the credics score to get this one but we'll see if he can pull any strings since he works there and it's a small local bank.

Seems to be a good beginner bike.  When I find a good deal on a CBR or R6, I'll upgrade later.

Most people that ride  (or know more than me) tell everyone to learn on a 250cc. But fuck that a 250 might as well have pedals.

It looks like a decent bike. its more of a sport/touring bike. Its no CBR, or R6, at only 71hp, it should get you up easily. Ninjas are good starter bikes from what i hear. and they do pretty much hold their value.

I dont know why that bike reminds me of an alien? maybe its the windscreen or the tail?

Same bike my sister learned how to ride on.  I wouldn't even waste my time with that.  For $3500 you can get a bike a couple years old and is sorta fast.  People always say to get a 250 or something slow as a starter bike, well that is fucking retarded.  They just don't want you to buy something better than they have.  You don't have to do 120 mph in first gear just because you can.  The only reason not to buy a liter bike is if you can't afford one, because they are a couple dollars more.

Why is it people insist on buying 600cc+ 100hp+ bikes and take them to 1/10th of their potential?  That ninja will be as fast as anything else on the road EXCEPT true sport bikes.  Big fucking deal.  Don't listen to anyone.  Just get a good 70hp bike that is 350lbs and comfortable to ride.

I have my 2000 SV650 and I've never even thought about getting something faster or more sporty.  It is more than enough bike for me.  It's relatively comfortable.  Easy to ride.  Fairly light.  It is also fairly forgiving.  I'm never looking for more power.  Just for shits and giggles one day I was riding next to my buddy in his 4 cyl Camry.  We were at a light and he rev'd at me.  Before I shifted into 2nd gear I was 8-10 cars in front of him.  He's not a car guy at all, and I'm no bike stud, hell, I didn't even launch the bike really, and I put that much distance between him and me by 60mph.

Sadly, since I don't have health insurance, I'm really not riding the bike now.  I know I have some medical coverage with the bike, but even so, if I crash, I'd rather die than have to come home to $100k in hospital bills.

congratulations it was a, camry, what's the point of buying a slow bike..just as boring as a car, and 100 times more unsafe..might as well buy a scooter

Are you seriously comparing a 150whp 2500lbs FWD econobox to a 62rwhp 350lb sport bike?  REALLY?  They aren't even in the same league so the fact you even throw that our as a comparison shows your knowledge level.

My point with the Camry illustration was to show how much faster a "low end" sports bike is vs an average vehicle.  The average vehicle is not a Corvette or a Viper.  If we are talking about safety and getting around average vehicles, it is clear that you can do that with a 350lbs 70hp bike.

As for insurance, go talk to someone who laid their bike down at a reasonable speed.  I promise their hospital bill was not $10,000 but more like $50-100,000.  I'm actually reasonably responsible and if I'm going to ride my bike, I'm going to be wearing some gear and have some insurance to cover my ass if I fuck up.  Have fun riding around knowing how many idiots are on the road.  Now look forward to one day getting in an accident and accruing enough debt to buy a house.

yeah even 500's are pretty fast compared to regular cars. but it does get slow pretty quick, you want a bike for the acceleration. anything less than 750 or 800 is going to get slow pretty quick.
the first day it seems fast and your almost afraid to go full throttle, but then a week later you drive full throttle all the time and your like WTF go faster you peice of shit.

If its your first bike, than get it.  Don't listen to all the fucking retards saying "You need to get a 1000 as your first bike yo"  Thats the easiest way to become a statistic just like every other dumb fuck who went out and bought something they had no buisness riding.  If its your first bike there's nothing wrong with starting out small.  They are easy to turn around and sell for little to no loss, insurance is unbelieveably cheaper, and if you drop it your not out of a ton of money.

And yes, starting on a smaller bike does make you a better rider cause you learn to handle the bike and use the power you have instead of just letting the bike do all the work.  I ride my girlfriend's Ninja 250 sometimes and I still have fun on it cause you can bang through the gears and ride the piss out of it without going 0 to instant death on the tight backroads like my 750.

That bike is faster than 95% of cars on the road and everyone saying to buy a 1000 or some stupid shit never even rode a 600 to its max potential unlessthey are highway fags

I worked with a guy that has a versys and he loves it, pretty much the same enigne I believe they either have the same frame or they are very similar.  I like the sv650 more but I'm biased since I owned one for a couple years.  I got rid of my sv and kind of miss it since it wasn't balls out all the time, it was predictable and easy to throw around.  It was still faster than most of the vehicles on the road.  I have a slow cruiser and a 03 z1000 still but the quick standards/sport bikes are a blast, wish I still had one.

When i first rode my 600rr on the freeway i hit 70mph and almost shit my pants. It seemed like i was fucking flying. Then the next day 80, and now i haul ass to work about 95 most of the way.

I have hit full throttle a few times, and its fucking exilerating. GOt it up to 130 before i bitched out and let off. THat was just too much. I pictured the tought of burning flesh and the scraping of bare bones. It was enough to never do it again Without the proper gear and on a coarse of coarse.

THats why i want to lose some weight, get fit, and get a suit and ride that bitch on a track. DOnt get me wrong, its still dangerous as fuck. You can lowside and get tore up, or you can highside and really break shit.

THen again you could be cruising a canyon taking it easy and have some dumb fuck spill over into your lane and hit you head on. Its a risk you take everytime you ride.

The only reason not to buy a liter bike is if you can't afford one, because they are a couple dollars more.

What the fuck?  Fucking homo.  $5k says I can turn a quicker lap on my 600 than you could on a 1000.  There's maybe .01% of the population that can really use a 1000cc bike to its potential in anything other than a straight line.  Christ you are a homosexual.  Fucking homo.  I can easily afford a lot faster bike than a 4 year old 636, but I sure as fuck can't ride it as hard as a 636.  Hell, I actually looked at picking up a 1098R.  It's not a money thing, it's a wish to push the limits thing.  There are guys out there that will be faster than your queer ass 1000 on an SV650.  Stick to the highways, you fucking cunt.

Josh, check out an SV650.  You can pick them up for around that price, the aftermarket is huge, and it makes a great track toy if you want to do that.  Or, pick up an 03-04 636 like someone else suggested.  You won't get bored.
