Slow Spool, too rich?
« on: April 22, 2010, 12:57:06 PM »

my spool time is shitty, z6, ebay 16g, 9psi @ 5000rpm
my tune is rich in boost, maybe just getting into pressure too
i might have an exhaust leak, but i know its not before the turbo(ive checked a few times)
im pretty sure theres no boost leaks either.
so could a tune thats too rich during spool cause slow spool??
any other ideas welcome too.

btw, my wastegate sticks open for a second at full boost (10psi), just for a sec tho

Could be the turbo.  Could be an exhaust leak.  Could be a boost leak.  Could be the tune.  Those are the 4 I would start off with.

Can I ask, why buy an eBay 16g?  I mean seriously, Evo8 turbos are $200.

i bought it last year, i never saw any evo 8 turbos for $200 then. havent looked lately

i figured if the seals or bearings go, then i could have it rebuilt with non-china internals

Exhaust leaking past the WG valve (no firering?) will slow spool.

Exhaust leaking into the engine bay, and into the air filter, will slow spool.

Boost leaking through a tiny hole in a charge pipe or BOV can slow spool.

An ebay turbo eating it's thrust bearing will slow spool.

There are a few other things that slow spool, but to a lesser extent. Retarding timing has little effect, at least retarding past the 'normal' amount for the corresponding boost. Regardless, 3/4 of slow spool problems stem from some sort of leak.

I used to tune my car to run 11:1 from 0-15 PSI boost, and spool sucked bigtime. On my setup, leaning it out to 13.5:1 at 0 PSI boost and tapering to 12:1 by 8 PSI helps spoolup and driveablity a ton. Night and day difference.

post turbo exhaust flow problem?  You have a cat?  a partially melted one will plug up the cat exit, making tons of back pressure.

Same thing here, they only look if the cat is there. It's like a 300$ fine if you don't have it...
