stupid question.. STD bearings?
« on: April 03, 2009, 04:30:06 PM »

hey all.. I got an LS motor for free a few days ago, and the owner ran it low on oil and thinks a bearing was spun.. he dropped the oil pan and took the bearings out of #1, and never did anything else..

SO, Can I just throw some STD ACL bearings in it and torque to spec, and be okay? I've been rebuilding a D as my first on and off, "the right way".. but i'd like to just get bearings back in so I can drop it in and ride. The stock cams look brand new.. The engine is very low miles, so I'm trying to not pull the head and pistons.

input plz

does it look like there are little bearing crispies stuck all around?

Does the journal on number 1 look like anything other than a perfect polished finish?

Does the end of rod number 1 look any different color or anything?

If it spun a bearing in the LEAST you're going to need to tear into it and flush the bearing debrit out or it's going to fuck itself in no time at all.  Usually the rod that spun is toast, the crank needs cut, the oil pump sometimes etc etc.

That said I do stupid shit like that all the time on cheap engines that get me a couple thousand miles, er used to when I had time to touch my car

wiggle it back and forth while you put it on, or else hit it with something and it'll go on

it won't strip the threads

It needs to go back the same way it came out or you will spin another bearing.

The stock shit can be very tight, and if its not perfectly aligned/parallel, it will bind as you put it on. Take it off, then use that plastic deadblow hammer to lightly tap each side a little (alternating) as you put it on. And don't be afraid to hit it when its 95% on, its desgined to be very snug to keep the journal perfectly aligned & round.
