Synchros?
« on: June 09, 2010, 04:45:13 PM »

I was searching ebay for trans bearing kit for a coworker (he thought $300 for an s20 was a good deal), and noticed some companies now offer just the synchro ring/sleeves. Has anyone tried them yet?

I guess a better question is if a synchro ring/sleeve change will fix the majority of existing grinding, assuming that any type of fluid change will not. It seems stealerships only offer the 2 complete & expensive kits for rings/sleeves/gears.

That is because you are buying from Gearspeed AKA Synchrotech Transmissions.

I tired a 3-4 sleeve on a GSR trans with a soso 3rd gear.  The results were less than stellar, as I expected.  Look at the dog teeth on the gears, then decide form there.  Personally, I would just replace it all.

Well for the money is it okay? If $150-$250 will fix most of the grinding vs $700 in parts from the dealership, I'd probably jump on that.

Atm my del sol's b16 trans grinds in almost all gears no matter how I shift it. I saw someone saying to look for wear on the dogteeth and sleeves - is it most common for the brass rings to die though?

The teeth on the brass will most likely be fine. Most of the time when the syncros go bad its the inside of them that get worn so they "bottom out" on the cone of the gear and dont offer enough resistance (due to excessive tolerance)to slow the gear down in order to keep from grinding.

... MUCH more problematic are the edges (points) on the selector sleeves. Check the stopping rings too, when they get flattened out  (see below) around the outside perimeter, they offer no drag to grab the sync ring and slow down the gear. My carlikes to eat them up in 4th gear...

buy the ebay shit. Itll be fine.

Nigger.

Pickys:

Flattened stop ring causing grinding even though sleeve is fine as mentioned above (This just came out of the slut yesterday)

1st gear syncro hammered from hard launch (Levi look familliar). Youll know if this is an issue by the trans being hard to getyinto first whilst moving at all... You may even have to double clutch it standing still... Excessive power being put to i forces the syncro ring to try and climb "under" the hub. I have an ide how to alleiviate this, but not the machinery to impliment it.

All of the s20's I have seen with 3rd gear grinds had broken shift forks. Usually 4th would grind too, but not always. Once I saw broken forks I didn't bother looking any deeper, kinda pointless when a perfeclty fine s20 can be had for $100-$150.

synchros only go bad after the slider and hub have been trashed.

BDVT, 1st gear brass hammered from hard launches????? PLEASE give it up. Only time first gear brass gets damaged is forced 2-1 downshifts.

Wrong.

Ive NEVER.... EVER stuffed it into first.

Take a closer look...  Theres a secret in front of you.

HINT: It ONLY EVER appears after raping the car HARD in first. Same with Levi... Same with others too.....

THX though.

As for the brass being damaged... A worn spring (as pictured) will cause it to happen as well.// but only the deformation of the teeth on the outside. I HAVE seen the insides of the cones "worn out" at east to where they bottom out on the gear... but not in my tranny... I have fixed a couple like that.

I do agree though that a grind is most often caused by a fucked up selector sleeve, the problems im seeing wouldnt be seen in a car at a moderate power level that doesnt get the shit beat out of it like my slut does
