i'm thinking i could use it to monitor boost levels in my efi 4.0L jeep and adjust MAP sensor voltage accordingly to 'fix' a/r levels.

seems pretty neat. I think they are on back order though.

It's a microcontroller development board. It can do about anything you can think of electronically. It takes inputs, whether it's a sensor, switch, analogue voltage, etc, and creates outputs. Those too can be many types of outputs, relays, led's, wireless modules, solenoids...anything with the right voltage and speed. The neat part is that you can write code to change its behavior very easily. This one is super cheap having a development board hooked to it. Usually a lower end chip costs this by itself.

The processor is slightly limited by todays standards, but for a LOT of simple applications it's goddamn perfect.

It's like the 08M PICAXE. It's so cheap and who gives a shit if it's slower than the newest uC. I don't always need speed or complexity for simpler logic circuits.

Three inputs, two to four outputs, depending on individual or wasted spark architechture.  As so:

Either combination of the following, used to determine engine position and therefore which cylinder/ignition output channel:

- IC10 pins 2 and 6 (CKP and CYP, best)
- IC10 pins 4 and 6 (TDC and CYP, probably just as good given the same premise as Blundell's FAR more complicated unit)

Take the IGO:

- Q38 pin 2

And MUX it out one of your 2-4 ignition channels.  Remember to use an ignitor.  And fuck your mother.

Arduino is good and so is picaxe for learning. Go to the picaxe website and you can download the editor and a three section manual that teaches you everything. It The third section is even a set of examples for each type of circuit you may want to build.  It does run BASIC which turns most people's noses up at it, but for learning uC's I find it good because it lets you learn the electronics quicker. The smaller setups are ~$10 with the board. They even have a starter pack that comes with everything to get you started.

Official site: http://www.rev-ed.co.uk/picaxe/
Starter pack @ Sparkfun: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8323

Once you learn the basics, changing platforms is a matter of learning the IDE and the uC's quirks. Once you get into you'll be surprised how easy most things are to build.

Most of the lower end tools on the market are perfect for the lower end micros.  I waster money buying a "newer" 20Mhz analog scope for $100 to the door, I've seen Hitachi V-212 like I trained on frist year of school go for $35 shipped on eBay and they have a better and easier to read graticule.  Also, the entry level/USN logic analyzer market is currently off the fucking hook - for $100-250 you can get 8-16 channel up to 100Mhz badness with built in protocol analyzers (RS-232, RS-485, CAN, I2C, etc).

Cool thanks.  Have seen arduino used for a ton of little projects.  Haven't heard of picaxe but I'll look into that too.

If I knew how to build anything electronic and program it, I would order one. But as I am barely more than a redneck engine builder, I don't see how I could justify buying one.

I got one on backorder... we'll see.  I have some ideas for this kind of thing.  I briefly fooled around with an FPGA with 30 or so in/outs and Java Optimized Processor.  Definitely super powerful shit in the hands of someone possessing the proper knowledgabilities.
