If I knew how to build anything electronic and program it, I would order one. But as I am barely more than a redneck engine builder, I don't see how I could justify buying one.

I'm kind of the same way, but I really want to learn it. I figured even if I only played with it for 20min, I spent less than $5.

I am ordering an Arduino tomorrow, after I decide which one to get ;D

Been reading the website, shit is pimp, and I already have a few projects I've been wanting to do for years but haven't known where to start...

Been seeing "Arduino" mentioned almost daily on the RSS feeds I watched, but never took a minute to see what the fuck they were.  Thanks for the suggestion.

EDIT: Already have a question :D

The board outputs 5v and up to 40mA draw...  I will be using it to control four 1w LEDs which has typical voltage of 3.6v and draw of 150mA.  I'm assuming this is a case where I'd use a relay?

16mhz GO!

Use a solid state relay - cheaper, faster, and they come in smaller IC format.

Thanks holmes.  Timing is crucial so that sounds exactly like what I need O0

Agreed, the precise flashing of LEDs is absolutely crucial.

For this project, yes.

I posted a video of it years back.

Now, to find a way to produce consistent drops of fluid at a consistent rate...

Pardon my electronic noobness, but if my understanding is correct this thing could be used as a sequential shift light. Right?

Nosir, I want to levitate or reverse the flow of water while controlling its speed as trip-entertainment, eventually maybe even "syncing" it with music.

A consistent rate and droplet would make the effect more believable.

You can do whatever the fuck you want with it, basically.

You have inputs/outputs (both digital and analog)...  You use the Arduino software to code it using a pretty damn simple programming language that looks like C++

Pardon my noobness for not knowing what a sequential shift light is, but I assume it lights differently according to the RPM.  It would be as simple as using one of the pins as input, coding it to read that input, then light up whatever LEDs you want to light up using the outputs.

Fucking simple.

That's what I figured. My electronic experience stops with ecu mods done with written instructions and tuning hondas. I'm parts changer for sure when to comes to electronics. My best troubleshooting consists of finding some swollen and leaking caps in my computer monitor. Fixed a $300 monitor for a few dollars. I am trying to read up on this stuff, but my serious ADD isn't helping.

damn, after looking at that, i am really getting excited about this. it looks like the only limits are the amount of inputs and outputs

The Arduino Mega has 54 inputs/outputs.  Which seems like it'd be more than plenty for just about anything.

I'm excited too.  Ordered one of the basic ones to play with for now.

I'd rather fumble with bench top gear than change oil for a living, even if the pay were the same.  I suggest you guys step up - most of your are easily bright enough to learn this shit.  Few of you will master any appreciable amount of analog, but as digital chips become more sophisticated and pick up that end of things for the end user that will become less and less important for the majority of hobbyists, and even professionals.

http://www.nkcelectronics.com/seeeduino-mega-fully-assembled.html

Just ordered that.  Smaller knock-off Arduino (still quality) with 70 inputs/outputs.

Also grabbed 60 UV LEDs for only $9 shipped, 2-pin JST to barrel adapter, 6.5vdc 2A adapter, small water pump, drip irrigation emitters, couple big slabs of perfboard, etc

That seems like a good price with all of the inputs/outputs but I am glad I only spent $4.5 on the off chance this makes no sense to me. After what I read last night though, I see no problems.

How much different are those other boards?

I need the inputs so grabbed this.

DealExtreme is the best for LEDs.  Looking at other places, the cheapest I could find them was $1.59 each.  DE had 20 for like $2-3.

TaydaElectronics has good deals on the other components.  Got 60 resistors for $0.01 each, and a ton of other buttons/switches/relays/etc for pennies...only because they had an order minimum of $5.

Perfboard I used JPMSupply.  Big 10"x4" sheets with interconnected rows for about $3-4.

Fading LEDs on a digital pin?  IT SHOULD WORK.

+2 internets to anyone who can explain how this will "dim" an LED on a digital pin that only has an on or off state.

Remember that you can buy mux/demux chips to expand your outputs and inputs for way less than a bigger board. I use shift registers to expand my outputs on slower projects. They cost about 25 cents each.

PWM?

and no i didn't even look at the code

Nah they only give the option of HIGH and LOW (on/off, 0/1) on those ports.  There's some PWM pins and some analog ones but not enough, this will work by flashing the LEDs to make them appear dimmer without your eye actually being able to tell it's flashing.

That's bit banged PWM. It's not as clean, but it works for LEDs.

so it's PWM
