What were they thinking?
« on: August 03, 2010, 12:37:40 PM »

I read this and went what the hell were they thinking?  :?:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38533071/ns/us_news-life?GT1=43001

None could swim
Marilyn Robinson, a friend of the families, watched helplessly as the children, five boys and a girl, went under, the Times reported.

"None of us could swim," the 38-year-old told the newspaper. "They were yelling 'help me, help me. Somebody please help me.' It was nothing I could do but watch them drown one by one."

This article brought back memory of my 13yr old who. in a pond that a big sink hole in it back in '88. :-\

And his friends could not save him because they were either too small, not strong swimmers, or could not find him. :'(

Well, it's really hard to say without going through the same experience.  I ASSume they were more concerned with saving their family/friends than their swimming skills.  Just a quick reaction.  The more that jumped in, the more incentive to jump in and save them...

I believe a sink hole is where the ground eroded below the surface from a underground river/stream.

And far is swimming being required I agree. I have all four my kids take lessons.

I my self do not swim very good so just stay away from water. :?: :-\

Yeah this winter I'm going to take some classes so I can get my skill up enough to lap swim.

Then I'll start lap swimming regularly for my health.

i grew up about 15 min from lake Michigan, so i would consider my swimming ability above average, but i go out there and see some of the people swimming and it honestly looks like they are just trying to see who can splash the most...

swimming is a good thing to know in a calm pool but once you get currents and under toes, lap swimming really wont help you for shit when its yanking you in all directions... (just something to think about)

ya, we've had a lake house allmost all of my life, and we used to stay up there for the summer when i was young.
as far as under toe and currents, you arent suppused to fight. it will take you out, but if you keep trying to swim in your getting nowhere. your supposed to swim parralel to the shore till your out of it then in, or tread untill its done, then swim over and in.
treading water efficiently might be more usefull than strong forward swimming

Shouldn't have been anywhere near a river if they can't swim.

The rivers in Louisiana are all deep black mud bottom. Sometimes you sink to your knees when you jump out of a boat near the bank. Sink holes are either where a tree uprooted long ago, or the current rips out a deep hole in one spot of the river.  They can easily reach 20-30' deep. The mud bottom, and the sudden drop off would be pretty fucking bad if you can't swim. I don't get why you would let your kids play in the river if you can't swim. We didn't let kids play in the pool without floaties.

its called fucking lay on your back, everyone floats this way. and dont say you sink that way, i know some guys who are like 5% fat and they still float on their backs. fatter you are=easier to float.

even though boy scouts is a bullshit religious organization, they do teach you how to survive in water.
i remember having to tread for like a hour, use your jeans for a lifevest, ect.

and currents? its just fucking moving water, ive never been in water that pulled strait down. and ive swam in the middle of rivers the size if the mississippi, off the backside of sand bars and shit-never experienced it.

I don't float on my back. I'm %13 body fat, but I'm too tall. My legs sink and I end up with my scalp sticking out of the water. I can kick a little and prevent it, but if I where ever in a long term survival situation, I would bite it as soon as my legs gave out.

Me too.

t_cel_t - I took swimming lessons when I was little.  Never could get me to float.  Don't bother spouting how I'm doing it wrong, I've tried everything suggested.  Not enough fat.  I can sorta float, but not enough to keep me above water.

I can easily lay on the bottom of a pool, though.

Lame, I can float effortlessly in the river and ocean.  I just lay back, relax, breathe, and let the water carry me along :)

Btw I've seen plenty of obese folks not able to float, it's weird.

How much air do you put in your legs when you inhale? I don't fucking float. I've taken water survival courses. I. Don't. Float. Unless you count vertical with only my hair sticking out.

anyone who says they have never been in water that could wisk them away hasn't spent much time in ocean waters.  North Carolina isn't the baddest waves on the planet but the current can take you a good mile or so before you realize it.  and im a pretty good swimmer, certainly not Michael Phelps but ill be damned if i couldn't swim a good mile or so down the beach.  current will wear you down and drown your ass quick.

striong current in a river maybe, but in the ocean it will fuck you.  quick.

retards who claim their legs sink have a weak ass core and no balance
stop trying to make excuses for your undeveloped apish body and no ability to survive

im the reigning champion of being fat free here and my spindly fucking legs float if i breathe correctly and maintain the correct position in the water

laying down like your mother about to recieve a wallup of donkey chode is not the correct posture although i can understand how you instinctively turn to it

Swim 90* to current.  In a river this means directly to shore.  In a rip current it means parallel to shore.

Indeed she does Sir, although I don't think she's really worth all the effort of digging up. Your average trailer park skank can be had for much less effort with a bucket of chicken and a fast car.

What a bunch of lemmings. Considering the authorities dug ditches specifically to keep people away tells me this is just Darwinism doing it's work. Looking at the survivors, I doubt they'd have contributed to society anytime in the near future.

Funny story: when I was 7, the neighbor kids had their cousin over - first black kid I ever met. We went swimming and I didn't believe it when everyone said he couldn't swim...so I pushed him in. He was 4ft tall and "sank" to the bottom, which was 5ft down. First time I ever thought to myself, "WTF?".

How much air do you put in your legs when you inhale? I don't fucking float. I've taken water survival courses.

No human will float like a chunk of foam, nor will any sink like a rock, although some appear that DENSE... Suck in & hold a full breath and you've just decreased density at your CORE from the air cavity you created with your lungs. I know when I inhale, my arms & legs are a little more boyant, probably due to more blood, which is less dense than your limbs. I have to exhale to actually sink. I know this because I was just swimming in the lake.

Even if the best you can do is keep your scalp at the surface, it takes a few flicks of the wrist to stay above. It's a simple "british wave" towards your feet - you're pushing water downward to create upwards lift. It's simple as fuck. If you're out of shape, chances are you'll need less effort to float - fat people float better. The link below (page 4) shows that animals get damned near the same density of water when they hit 25% body fat. Well over HALF the US population is at that point, or higher.

yup, for floating i lay back and take semi-quick inhale and hold it for a bit then exhale slowly and start to sink a bit, then repeat. my legs do danlge a bit, but i dont give a shit. my head stays above water with just the breathing
