White smoke from exhaust, turbo or motor?
« on: January 30, 2012, 05:33:16 PM »

Recently I started smoking from the exhaust (white) after freespooling the turbo after a charge pipe broke. I figured possibly I pushed it a little and the turbo seals were giving way so I decided to clock it better and hopefully eliminate the issue. I do have a oil restrictor on the turbo so hopefully that's ruled out.

Now seeing a oil leak where the head gasket is so I figure a compression check is in order. I did recently remove the turbo to clock and did not notice oil on the exhaust hosing though.

Any suggestions and recommendations always appreciated.

White smoke while accelerating?

White smoke while under boost and load?

Can't recall ever seeing a journal bearing turbo be the cause of white smoke. That is typically left too burning coolant.

Engine is my guess, specifically head gasket or sleeve or something else coolant related.

I use to get this with my s/c on when I had the ignition too advance.  :noel:

It's at idle right and it starts smoking almost immediately after I start the engine even from completely cold. When I give it some gas it just throws it out even mOre. I took a video but the smoke was really pathetic and it almost seemed like it was going away. Sure though a minute later it smokes again.

HG and I hate DOHC HGs have fun.

Is your thermostat stuck or cooling lines routed wrong.

I had the same issue when the engine was warmed up.

When I had the two hoses switched and stock style thermostat.

With the engine warmed up I was getting white smoke out the pipe at idle and under load.

Switched thermostat w/ 3 1/8" hole drilled in it and the white smoke went away but I had no heat.   :noel:

Fixed the coolant hose switch and everything is golden.  :noel:

Are you sure it's not just because it's cold outside? :P

Because if you see white smoke at idle chances are that you would see a fucking huge opaque white cloud when you rev your engine higher than idle with pressure building up in the system.

Just show that video, even if it's pathetic.

Yeah, rich running motors will definitely appear to be blowing white smoke in the cold,  My LT1 Z28 did it when cold (open loop) and my carb'd 302 does it constantly. But as soon as its 50 plus you can't see a thing.

Blown headgasket or turbo
This video does not really show the extent of the smoke at all but it's what I took earlier. I was tripping out in the end thinking it was some oil buildup or something. But like I said above a few minutes later it was smoking again. Not seafoam smoke but kinda close

Seems to be coming from between the turbo & manifold. So good news its not the turbo. Bad news is its not the turbo.

Last time I saw this was an H22 that blew the HG. It was pushing smoke on the freeway, they drove it another few miles to a park&ride. Do you happen to have ARP's that you put on w/in 1k miles?

When you rev it, does more smoke come out, or does it stay close to the same?

It would mostly smoke at idle at sometimes during boost.

So I found what it was.. One, my drain was on the lower portion of the pan. I didn't even notice this!

And the turbo being clocked in a aweful way just contributed to the amount of oil thAt was getting trapped in the drain.

Fixing the second issue stopped the smoke but both were Contributing to the problem. No smoke
