Computer nerds- need help with laptop
« on: November 26, 2011, 06:25:50 PM »

My laptop just died- I suspect it may have overheated. It just shut off on it's own and won't turn back on. It's cool now and I tried pulling te battery and putting it back in with no change. The batter light comes on when it's plugged in bt that's the only sign of life. Any diagnoses Ican do? Anything to try? I'm trying to finish my thesis this week and I'm fucked without my laptop- I have some of it backed up but there is a lot I need that I don't have without it. Thoughts? It's a 5ish year old Acer extensa 4420 if that helps at all...

Do you know if the charger is still working?

You could of burned up charger and the battery is not getting a charge enough to keep your lappy running.

My ACER is 7 yrs old the battery has been crap for two years, but the charger still works.  :noel:

Should still be working- the light comes on, and I'm pretty sure it had a full charge when it died- I replaced the batter a couple years ago and it still holds a charge for an hour and a half or so

Absolutely nothing?  Power switch probably dead, or worse.

If I open it up will I be able to tell if the power switch is fucked? And is it difficult to replace? Never worked on a laptop before, I've only done simple shit ondesktops

Never fucked with one, although I have a laptop at home right now that I need to check the power switch on (almost definitely the switch), just haven't got around to it.  They're pretty simple, so shouldn't be hard to test with a multimeter or something...I'm sure you can search for some quick guides.  Difficulty of getting to the switch I'm sure varies by model...

Should try Google Docs, or external drive, or cloud syncing sometime, in case a similar situation occurs :P

If the laptop is toast you can take out the card drive and connect it to another computer via a USB cable kit. You can find one on newegg for sure.
