small block 400
« on: December 11, 2011, 11:01:06 AM »

So I am toying with the idea of doing a domestic build. Lookin to get a 72 nova and a small block 400

Car will be flat black,tuned, and caged. Anyhow on to the real ?

I don't know to much on the 400.  Gramps said they don't like to be revived out. I know about the steam holes in the head. I really wanna do this. Would it be a pain in the ass to make it fuel injected. Fuck i hate this cell fone. Will post agin from my comp just looking for advice. Any ideas guys.

Depends on your goals.

Low end torque build or high reving and reving hp build?

And is the block a '72 or a little newer?   :noel:

Stock Gen3+ truck motor with harness and ECU will probably be cheaper, and faster.

Keep in mind that to buy heads equivalent to a Gen 3+ truck motor for a classic 400 SBC is $2000.  That's Gen 3+ engine/trans/wiring/ECU and probably your driveshaft cut.

I have to agree with the Grand Wizard here.

I keep thinking about build a gen 1 SBC for shits an giggles, but every time I think about the money it takes to make even Gen3 bolt on power, I change my mind with the quickness.

Now a Gen 2 SBC on the other hand.  Johnny can show us how to make gobs of power and never have an Optispark failure.

There's an 11.3:1 ported stock head stock IM/TB LT1 in my parkinglot that makes 464whp 453wtq, and the dyno graph looks obviously strangled (by the IM/TB).  That's FUCK YOU LS1 power.

The Opti is weird, and reverse flow cooling system is dumb, but if I had a good LT1 I'd run it instead of dropping an LSx in its place.  They came from the factory with a pickup truck cam, that's really all that's wrong with them.

I left out the fact it's 396cid, but that's it :P. Nasty cam, headers, the only Y-pipe setup I've ever seen that didn't suck.  It has a nitrous setup on it but we've not sprayed it yet.

well i wanted to build the 400 cuz its my gramps and he keeps pushing it on me. i would like to do an lsx build. iunno though. i will have to think more about it.

if i built the 400 i would want 450lbs of torque. rev it to 6k. gramps says they dont like to rev.

origanally i wanted to rev it to 8.5 or 9k but he said thats a no go. lol.

about the heads. i read that i could use any 350 style head as long as i use a headgasket to drill the steam holes.

just build a 383 stroker

383 = 400 crank, 350 block.  he wants to use 400 motor.

377 or 352 if you want to rev it to the moon.

:)

377 = 4.125 bore and 3.48 stroke.

352 = 4.125 bore and 3.25 stroke.

Keep in mind that the main bearing journals are different between the SBC 400(2.65") versus all other large journal small blocks(2.45").  There are solutions out there though...

I hope I remembered all of that correctly.  lol.

Lighten up the valve train and use a solid flat tappet cam.

You can get power out of a 400 but with the siamesed cyl walls things are a lil thin on the structal walls. Will be like a d15 with 12lbs boost. Cracked cyl walls...... Me being a chevy man i got a nice 400 with some dished forged pistons im gonna stick on some canfiels aluminum heads i got and a nice lumpity hydralic roller and a pt67 turbo and see what happens. You want any info on the efi setup i have a bolt on standalone vortec ecu and harness for the vortec inatke setup. Bolt on some ported vortec heads and see what happens should bild very respectable power for way less than a ls build. I am looking for a ls 6.0l block if anyone knows of one. Got a project truck i wanns try  it on.

400 can make big power and torque, if you get a good crank they can rpm high

my dads was revving to 7600, but crank ended up cracking, was a lunati crank

they are externally balanced, you can buy a internally balanced crank $$$

Well new idea. On the vehicle. Gramps has a 42 Ford pick up I've been begging for. Lol. I think he is final ready to let me get it. I just can't chop it up he said. We'll see Wat he says today.

Hatchracer. the head worked fine in my car. it never even got used like I wanted to because I was having other issues with the car so I sold every  thing. your the only person who had problems with anything. and besides that the valvetrain cost more then Wat u paid for the head plus shipping    you can always send it ha k to me and I will build a motor just for it.

realy since everyone that saw pictures said it was junk. Wouldn't run right cause the valves didn't seat. Paid for valve train? I paid for a working head not one I had to put more money in. you said it was running on your car so that means you knew for a fact about the cam cap inserts where completely gone. Your a douche that sold me fuck up shit and are trying to justifie it with more bull shit.

not to mention the rusted up cams

So your not arguing that your head wasn't fucked? Dude if you shipped him a head that was fucked, and claimed it was in good shape your a real piece of shit. Way to fuck over a stand up guy. I personal know Jeff and the dude would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. And you calmed it was in working order and in the pics it looks far from working.

FUCK YOUR THREAD! I hope your piece of shit 400 throws a rod out the side.
