I got the Logitech z-5300 ages ago and I usually have windows turned to 66% throttle volume, and have the "remote" dongle thing set to 2/7. For comparisons, it's 35w each speaker and 100w sub. Cranks up to piss-off-neighbors level fairly well.

been pissing off the neighbors since I bought them in 2009.  interestingly they cost more now then when I bought them at circuit city.

A decent receiver hooked up to a pair of inexpensive, efficient towers.

Oh wait...

Been rockin' Logitech x-530's for a while, they are loud and clear for only 74.95

Have a set of those, they are pretty awesome, got them for $50 brand new.  Got a set of altec lansings for the girlfriend (http://www.alteclansing.com/ae/us/computer-speakers/vs2621/invt/vs2621/&bklist=icat,3,shop,computerspeakers), they aren't as loud as the logitechs, but sound cleaner.

Next setup is going to be either one of the Logitech Z-series (not sure if I want/need surround sound anymore), or an actual reciever connected through the optical audio port.  Or maybe even something nigged together out of car audio parts.  Or some combination of regular computer speakers for when I'm gaming/actually sitting at the computer, and regular stereo for when I'm just playing music.

I tried that with the coaxial digital output, but got a slight delay  (was using with cheap ass walmart surround sound though)  fine for music, but you dont NEED surround sound for music.  very annoying while trying to watch a movie

Ouch, I'll have to watch out for that when I go shopping for a reciever.

I have this one that I paid 30$ and it's loud enough imo.

http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/speakers-audio/home-pc-speakers/devices/5872

My idea is to put one set per room and control them with ebay tablets (I have the 65$ model and bought the capacitive 130$ model). One set is loud enough to hear it in the entire house, but it's not the point of my setup.

So far I have one tablet connected with my desktop to play music and 2 sets of speakers. It's not best quality, but for 30$ I don't really care :)
