Anyone owned a '96 Jetta before?
« on: April 22, 2009, 09:17:07 PM »

We're thinking about getting a 96 Jetta for my sister tomorrow but I figured I would check here first and see if anyone has had experience with them. Anything to look for? How did you like it?

My VW neighboor says that that is the generation that VW went to shit. I've helped him work on his '91 and its not too different from a honda, but the newer stuff looks like it was built by an engineer that never turned a wrench.....I mean wheel bolts?? come on.

My girl used to have a '98. It was just ok, I convinced her to get rid of it for an Accord  :noel:

I thank god that the stupid vacuum lock system never broke. But the driver door lock cylinder did, which is a huge bitch because it's the only fucking door on the car with a keyhole.

I "OWNED' a 15 year old girl, in the back seat of a 96' Jetta.

The suspension was bouncy, and the defroster didn't work that well, I guess it couldn't handle my Mountain Man Sex Musk.

I owned a 96 Jetta, with the 1.9IDI TD. Had a couple of rattles, changed out the crank pulley for the TDI style, other then that ran great, and got about 55mpg. Had 379,000KM's on it when I sold it.

There is nothing wrong with wheel bolts from an engineering standpoint.  Every Porsche built in the last ten years has used them.  Including all those 1000hp+ supra/bike killing 911 turbos. Markski's car is running low 9's in the quarter with mostly home fabricated stuff and a set of gt3 cams.  Looks stock on the outside, including wheels.

My passout has its flaws like a stupid plastic heater core that has failed, retarded door handles (mine are cool so far *knocks on wood*) but honestly I cant see getting back into a civic after having one.  i got more power and more luxury for the same price, size and only a slight hit on MPG.

Depends on what you want from it.  I wanted a cheap beater for less than 3k and i got one sweet ass daily.  I would ditch this car in a heartbeat if i wanted to go fast or achive baller status or if those damn chains start gettin noisey.  Fuck all that.

My passat feels like it has more soul than my civic.  Civic just felt like a dirty slut, you could beat teh shit out of it and you know you can still turn it on, it has no emotions.  Passat on the other hand feels more refined.

Had a '98 2.0 Jetta. Bought it..sold it for $800 more than what I paid for it, after replacing the transmission. Then about a month after I sold it, I drove by it burned to the ground on the side of the road.

An MK2 with a crossflow swap is actually a pretty fun car to drive around that could be made even more fun with a 14b or something.

Joseph has been dicking around with some digifant stuff for Richard's corrado, using tunerpro r/t to tune.  Digifunk is the shit.  Easy as hell to work on, and dead nuts reliable.

Speaking of VW Richard...

Richard laid the third (known) replacement transmission into a '98 2.0 GTI yesterday.  Poor dude who owns the car loves it, Richard says, "I've tried to tell the guy three times that anything after 92-93 is horrible, but he doesn't understand."    :-\

You should see inside of those old aba trans.  The gears make dsm trannies look like fucking gods.  Has to be the single smallest, dinkyest, gearbox ive ever seen in a car.
