car audio upgrade time.... (sub/amp/etc... Galant)
« on: November 10, 2013, 06:08:26 PM »

ok so i got the Civic pretty fuckin dialed id say. im happy anyway. drove the GVR4 around and damn, fucker sounds like shit.

currently installed:
oldshool Pioneer deck (3rca out. has oled display with the dolphins and shit)
Pioneer 2ways x4. 5.25" i think (bought 2 years ago)
think its got x2 small ass dash speakers too?
x2 MTX Blue Thunder 10" subs in box
shittly old lookin JBL amp

now this sub/amp combo was in my EK 4dr when i got it. it hit hard. was, ehh not so clean. but bumped. installed it in my GVR4 and CRX, didnt sound half as good?!? (different deck, think it had a Alpine in the EK)

pics of this shit:

quality pics. this stuff is forsale if anyone wants it?

so as for high/mids... im ok with what is in the car. might upgrade them later, but they are ok. sub/amp shit sucks.

i have this subwoofer already:

i bought a pair when i did the EK system.  ill wire it the same too. (paralleled)

thinking of getting the same box as i have in the EK also.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Obcon-R-T-12-Woofer-Single-Labyrinth-Slot-Vent-Subwoofer-Box-Enclosure-318-12-/121031052407?pt=US_Speaker_Sub_Enclosures&hash=item1c2e034c77
make this shit consistent??

ill be needing a new amp, cuz im gonna assume this amp was NEVER meant to be powering a sub (or 2). i have an ORION HCCA 225G4 amp in the EK powering the same sub/box combo. works well. and i see a couple of those on ebay for around $200...

i also took a quick look at some new offerings from a couple manufacturers, and looks like i can get a new amp for 150-220bucks msrp. are these new amps worth a damn (powering the above sub)?  or maybe another quality used amp i can easily find? guessing 400-500w rms is the range im looking at.

also. is my deck going to really effect the way my sub/amp/box perform? cuz like i was saying the only thing besides the car is the deck on the mtx/jbl combo thats in my car now.

so what you guys say? suggestions? opinions?

for those speakers, 2ohm load a good amp, probably twice the rms if you want to push them hard, but 500-800rms should be good. they are highly underrated. a friend of was running close to 900rms to a pair SD 8" v2.  get a radio with like 4volt preouts. or if you want sound quality, a kenwood or alpine will suffice.

im running a alpine cde133bt hu, kicker 6.5 in the doors, vibe slicks 4" in the rear deck, and a alpine mini amp inline with the deck(45w rms per channel), then im running a kicker zx500.1 to a pair of vibe blackdeath qb69's on subs only(3 way components, look those up) in a 2 cbft ported box.

this amp will do you good, http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_28006_Kicker_ZX5001.aspx

pro tip: watts rms isn't a real measurement, or a real thing (V rms and I rms, both real)

pro'er tip: everything inside the amp is measured in voltage, db, capacitance and resistance

more pro'er tip: load/voltage determines current then power can be calculated

Alpine ftw. U can pick up used alpine amps on ebay for cheap. I just missed a 75x4 for 38$ shipped    So pissed. Anyhow. Alpine all day. There are other nice quality companys out there but ifnit aint broke.

All these new amps are mostly garbage. When it comes to amps you know u get wat u pay for in sound quality.

thats why i stick with CEA compliant amps. you get what you pay for. there are some good amps that are not CEA rated at a fraction of the cost. although they are overrated in the wattage department. the Boss impact and phantom series are great amps, and then you have Massive audio nx/ns series which are also damn good. almost anything else i would avoid.

so these are most of your CEA-2006 compliant amps:

dc audio, sundown audio, audioque, sound digital, Rockford Fosgate, kicker, alpine, stetsom, cactus sounds, audison
atomic, jbl crowns, incriminator, american bass, soundstream, Rd audio, focal, kenwood, cadence zrs, crescendo, high end hifonics, older US amps, older orion, mmats, crossfire, Butler audio, polk audio, MTX, boston acoustics, pioneer, infinity, obsidian audio, Memphis audio, Addictive audio, powerbass, audiopipe, zapco

I've been using my phoenix gold xs series amp for over 10+ years and that fucker is still kicking strong. Bought it on eBay with a burnt up channel, shipped it to Phoenix gold in Portland. They rebuilt the whole amp and bench tested it and sent it back all for $100. So I have a total of $125 in the amp and its been pushing my 2 jl audio 12"v2 subs for over 10 years. Damn solid piece. Also been running a old Kenwood kac amp for my mids and highs for the same amout of time. Also solid.
