junkyard v8s and manual trans
« on: November 25, 2013, 07:33:02 PM »

say i got a spare rwd car laying around with no engine in it, and i want to find the cheapest gm v8 motor that can take some boost maybe, and cheapest manual trans that can hold alittle power, which cars would these come in?

My gf dad said some shit about mustang manual transmissions can bolt up to LSx motors, is that true or is he talking some old dinosuar shit

i read this big list of gm V8s lsx motors and what they come in and whats good and bad about them, but i forgot most of it  alot of it was talking about newer trucks and vans n shit

is there a popular junkyard ford v8 swap that can be found with a manual trans and take some boost?

LSx 4.8/5.3/6.0 out of a truck. should be $400-800 range.

your not finding a manual trans that will hold power for "cheap".  but a T56 out of a LS1 Camaro/Firebird is what youll be looking for.

we have another member here that loves to put 4.8/5.3s in shit and boost them into the 9s... sure someone will post up some of his shit. he hasnt posted himself in a while. do a search here for Fairmont.

Might be able to score an old one and an adapter for less than a t56 and should be stronger than a t5, right?  Maybe i'm making it up

R154 is the only thing that has a chance of lasting, not easy to bolt up to LSx. I want to say the bellhousing to trans pattern is the same as a T5 but I'm not 100% on that.

T5 from GM shit (V6/V8 F-bodies, S10, etc.) is the only cheap manual trans, but likely won't last long under abuse in anything over 2500#

T5's in mustangs barely hold power of stock motors.... the GM ones that much better?

im gonna guess that if it bolted to older gen sbc it will bolt to an LSx... the older 4l80e's seem to bolt up like 4/5 holes.

No.

You can buy a new TKO  600 for the price of a used (working) T56 however, and the clutch won't cost you your first born.

They are not a low effort transmission, not the ones I've driven anyways. You have to shift like you mean it, every time.

Lots of cars came with chevy 350s in them. depending how new you want to go.
you are talking LSx so I'm assuming you want newer. however if you're just looking for an older engine you can find the LT v8 in
    Y-body:
        1992–1996 Chevrolet Corvette C4
    F-body:
        1993–1997 Chevrolet Camaro Z28, B4C and SS
1993–1997 Pontiac Firebird Formula and Trans Am
    B-body:
        1994-1996 Buick Roadmaster
        1994–1996 Chevrolet Caprice
        1994–1996 Chevrolet Caprice Police Package
        1994–1996 Chevrolet Impala SS
        1994–1996 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon
        1994–1996 Buick Roadmaster Wagon
    D-body:
        1994–1996 Cadillac Fleetwood

Not sure on cheap manual trannys that hold power.
I think you will be better off spending a little more on that

It does meet the prerequisite of cheap and strong though.

I guess the question is WHY do you want stick if it's going to have gobs of torque? That turbo Silverado on here made >800lb/ft of torque on chinese twins from a 5.3L (or was it a 4.8L?), that's enough torque to make a 2-speed powerglide feel fine on the street.

You can hook an LSx to a standard TH350 or TH400 trans/converter with a proper flex plate or adapter/spacer ring. Slap on an 4.8L and you're golden. The hardest parts will be making a kick-down linkage if it's an old tranny.

pretty sure LQ4/6.0L + aluminum heads...

and im sure its more the feel... i feel completely out of place driving an auto to the point where i dont like them.

I enjoy my diesel truck as a auto but most of the time I agree.
