Catalytic converter and turbo.
« on: May 09, 2009, 09:52:04 AM »

ITS A NO GO!
race track opened in Germany may first this year, so got car ready, and roll out to the to see what I will run 8 psi , note I have 11.5 psi spring in my wastegate, and boost controller set to 14psi, something is wrong, I double check my s300 boost setting. all seemed fine, second run the following day with slicks, yes I am gonna do some damage, cause you can't beat me a 20 psi ;D. boost set for 20 psi came out the hole like a bore out of hell O0. 16psi on the 2step. 3rd gear I had no power one the race, but only at 4 psi after checking data log. I raced 3 more times before I quit.

drove my car home on the autobahn about 150 mph the whole way on 4 psi.

a week a of trouble shooting and and checking piping swapping wastegate springs, changing couplers and piping.
bypassing boost cantroller and all.
note car still drives good so I had no signs of a blocked cat.
last check after doing some thinking. normally I can hear the turbo through the exhaust at idle or low speeds. did not hear it. so I decided to check the cat , when I pulled it half the internals were already gone, the rest was just blocking the exhaust flow, punch the rest out :somb: and reinstalled, problem fixed instantly.
this happened to my friend last year except it did not block his exhaust it got blown out on its own.

magnalow high flow

well better keep an eye on things, we took the cats out of my buddys 450ish hp car and it leaned out a full point and then ruined a piston the next day at the track.

cats and rich tunes to keep detonation at bay do not play well together, the cat gets way to hot trying to burn off the excess fuel and melts down.

wasnt my car, he knew it was a problem but the tuner said it should be ok. built motors should be able to handle 12.5 afrs.

I definatley had to retune the car . I had add a lot more fuel to the entire map, went from 14.7 afr idle to 18 afr. and cruising around 16.4 afr, boost was at 12.7 afr after I removed the cat insides.

orly? How about bearings, did you modify the block for some speacial bearings too? Detonation may not kill a piston, but it will break stock sleeves, ruin valves, and destroy bearings.

When I pulled my EF's cat out, half the shit inside was melted. Cats are definately not intended for power or too much fuel. I laugh at the high-flow waste-of-money crap.

I cant belive that he was even running one. ???
I dont know anyone that has a honda that makes over 200 hp and still has a cat. Why would you not take it out? SHould make for alot faster spool, and alot more top end power.

I had it in because I recently had instection, plus it makes my car more quiet, I have 3" exhaust with know muffler, I think what really got it melted was the 2step at 6500rpm 16psi lauches, I tested it 2 times before I lined up and once on the line. plus I drove for 4 months on it. the cats are not that bad unless you abuse the shit out the car, normal driving is ok.
