Need some advice! Please

Hello RHMT, I've come here as there aren't many useful places to discuss the homemade turbo topics...

Anyway I'm in need of some advice, I have done alot of work on cars from remapping with winols to changing headgaskets and fabbing and welding, I have only done one NA to turbo conversion on a mk3 golf 2.0l 8v and went well (using an FMU 🤣) bear in mind it was only 5 or 6 psi

So now I own a 1.2 TSI VAG engined car with a little IHi RHF3 turbo capable of 130odd hp, and have a few questions regarding it

To increase power can I machine the compressor housing to accept a bigger co.pressor wheel and  make more flow and achieve my goal of 180hp? And maintain reliablity? Or will the extra weight on the turbo shaft destroy it?

If not I will use the bigger turbo from the 1.4 TSI engines capable of 200hp, but the early ones use a vacuum wastegate actuator, can I just plumb in a vacuum line to the actuator and then adjust boost by the waste gate rod? Or are they actively controlled by varying vacuum from a solenoid?

I'm a fabricator welder by trade so will have no problem fabbing and welding the manifold to suit the car and new turbo, and all the charge piping, I'm currently working as a TIG welder as I felt like I needed a little change so currently welding exotic alloys like incoloy, invar, ss316, chromoly etc

Go with the bigger turbo. Cut the waste gate line and put your boost controller inline. Just open a touch and it should make just over the factory Watergate pressure. Open it more and it should bleed off pressure from the waste gate line and it should make more boost.

Unfortunately the stock wastegate actuator is electrically operated no vacuum diaphram/can, if I change turbo can I do as you said? The other turbo has a vacuum can I'll have to plumb into vacuum and then put the boot controller online?

Yes, if the ecu will allow it.
