Jz swap into 92 toyota pickup (now NSFW)
« on: July 26, 2009, 09:55:34 AM »

Should I do this?

Truck needs engine and trans, body is decent.  Thinking of swapping in a 1jz-gte, or a 2jz-ge to turbo later.

Any experienced input would help, if I do this shit, its gotta run within a month and make a 600 mile trip

Your right, as soon as I get a good monitor for my laptop, porn will insue, untill then, I'm restricted to a shitty blackberry internetz.

I was just wanting some input, just something I thought would be cool to do seeing as how my 22re is fucked and so is the trans.  BTW, I may be moving to Indy in september, and need this shit done before then.

302 would be cool

The jz was a thought, the 22REs thrust washers were in the pan, block and crank are fucked, trans is fucked in 3 4and 5 pops out of gear, I'd say may be the thrust, if it were only like 4

for the sake of getting it done quickly and simply a carb'd 302 is your best bet if your not going with a 22re. However a JZ swap either one would be sweet. but like was said before if your asking then you probably can't get it done in time.

just get a 2wd v6 drivetrain throw on some headers and swap the wiring over.

Im inclined to agree with this Jordan.  While the JZ is superior overall, the 5vz is a hell of alot cheaper and can hold up to a fair amount of boost bone stock.  Also, you should know that much like a 302, the headers are symetric on the VZ series and can be swapped from either side to face the front = easy turbo setup.  I have a friend who pioneered the mr2/5VZ swap and his budget was sub-$1000 turbo and all.  You can probably get away with a piggyback too.

Your biggest problem with this swap wont be making power, it will be traction.  Go ahead and buy some sandbags and toss em in the bed.  ;)

I think the 302 will be my best option, parts are dime a dozen and they are plentiful.

Thanks for the input guys, porn and boost to come still.

22rte

So he can replace rod bearings with every oil change?  I think not.

Stock 302 w/100 shot and slicks you'll have little problem running 11's Jordan.

RTE was an original consideration, but I decided against it.

The 302 however is plentiful everywhere, parts are cheap, and they take a lot of abuse.  I'm scouring the locals here in GA and AL to see what I can find before going to the bone yards.

7m-gte
5vz-fe1uz-fe

no point in swapping a 22rte. overpriced old torqueless blahs that only gets worse when you swap the turbo off it to a bigger one.

and dont get a 2jz-ge planning to turbo it later. youll get better mileage, less reciprocating weight, 33% more displacement and have the same rought unbuilt / built power limits a 2jz-ge will have with a 1uz-fe.

1uz-fe aint all its cracked up to be.  1L more displacement with less room in the engine bay, old worn out oil leaking engine with a billion miles on it (most the -92 blocks are now).  Or settling for the thin rod motors is a waste since rods will run you upwards $1000. Then your limited in your transmission options.

2jzge with a 2mm headgasket and the P2W clearanced to the turbo specs and you will have an efficient turbo engine that will last longer than the truck.  Never mind that the 2jz is generally cheaper as its easier to find than a 1uz.

Not starting an arguement here, just offering a different perspective on the variables.  All things being equal, the 1uz has it on paper, but not in the real world or this site where cheap is god.

the rods are atleast 100hp weaker than the best sets toyota was making on the earlier v8/v6/i6's. despite improving the metallurgy while slimming down the rods (they did NOT improve the metallurgy until more rescently which is where the problem arose.)
but you're still distributing that load over 8 instead of 6.

for USDM i find the 1uz-fe's to be easier to find  & in better condition for less than a grand than the 2jz-ge's. you can get's the two stronger JDM v6's imported for even less.

and throwing a huge monkey wrench into it you can have complete (with turbo, managementless) JDM 2jz-gte's imported & at your door for $1500.

I think we can both agree that the 5vzfe is def the best cost/power for this swap of the toyota options.  Its really an awesome motor whose limitations are really just in the cams.  Bolt to many diff transmissions and millions of parts trucks laying around.

What rwd tranny would u put behind the 5v if you went 2wd?  Will the W or R series work?

Both work with the rwd pickup bellhousings. Also, vz motors bolt up to S-series trannies.

I vote 5vz-fe. They are a good motor. The one in my truck has 210,000 on it.

The cams produce good low end torque. I bet if you had a quick spooling turbo it would produce nasty low end torque.

I've heard 3vz cams make a nice combo on the 5vz-fe. More mid-range power.

I'm not entirely sure if the motor will bolt in or not.

erd on the cams. 5vz-fe falls on its fucking face instantly. 3vz-fe's rev out
can't swap 3vz-fe cams into a 5vz-fe. i forget why, but the truck guys were looking into it years and years back & noone could ever get it done.

5vz would be the easyest swap because its the most knonw
